Somebody could have prevented the cross, Virgil could have made a better interception, Lovren could have stuck tighter to his man, Alisson could have saved it.
None of these things happened.
On another day one of them might, but sometimes it just doesn't go for you. This is (one reason) why I constantly disagree with the philosophy of trying to play out a narrow advantage. You can just come unstuck in a moment.
Fortunately we were dominant enough for it to be no more than a blip.

And that is a salient point. No matter how good your defence is (and ours is a damn sight better than in the near past), it only takes one jammy deflection, one bad refereeing call or one trick that only comes off one in thousand to scupper your plans. All the more reason to not relax until you're three or four up.

This seems to be VVD's weakness. He scruffs no end of clearances, particular from that side.
