It's surprising how loud a mixture of lullabies and snoring can be, especially when accompanied by the sound of opening thermos flasks and sandwich boxes.
I actually think we need new 'Saints' songs rather than player songs. The atmosphere is terrible and it doesn't help when we just switch between OWTS, shoot the pompey scum and a variation of "we are southampton...." Plus let's face it, our songs will change every season or 2 if they're player related What do people think the reasons for poor atmosphere are? It's certainly not just Saints who suffer from it, is it a lot of people being priced out of the game? Would bringing safe standing in help? I certainly think the atmosphere was better with 18k in league1 than it is with a full house now.
If coordinated properly, opening of thermoses and boxes could sound like our version of Stomp. With added mint slurping.
Like a Virgil, Scored for the very first time... Like a Viiiiirgil, He's a Dutchman, and he's mighty fine. (This is why Fable writes the lyrics...)
Speaking as an young 'Oldie', just a sprightly 64, it doesn't stop me trying to up the atmosphere. Even in the stately Kingsland we have been known to sing! However having gone to Leicester, (same stadium design as ours), last season where there was a sustained effort by the M.C. pre-match to whip up an atmosphere along with those 'clappy things' placed on every home supporter's seat, their team came out onto the field to a crescendo of noise that was maintained for much of the game..
Clappy things? Will I have to wear my sandals too? It was bloody amazing atmosphere at King Power last season.
Don't forget they were fighting for survival and the atmosphere at any ground is at its best when something is riding on the match. St Marys rocks when something is at stake - are we becoming a bit too comfortable without the often end of season tension we have been used to over the past decade?
Yeah every ground can be loud for big games. Even the Emirates was rocking on Tuesday and I'm sure normally quiet OT will be on Sunday too. I would say almost 0 in the PL are loud on a week-to-week basis.
We seemed to come up with a lot more original songs in league 1. I often wonder why that is, especially as the ground was only 3/4 full at best.
