Although I understand your comment that "we weren't at war" because an official declaration of war was not delivered by the Queen, we were certainly "at war" in practice, in exactly the same way we went "to war" in Iraq in both 1999 and 2003. But that "no one had been killed" is a complete fabrication.

Much of the history of any war is often written by the victors, and I'm not going to claim the sinking was either the right or wrong thing to do. But facts show it did lead to the end of the war by stopping Galtieri in using any more ships. And also that 3 days after the end of the war, Galtieri's military junta was removed, leading eventually to a real democracy in Argentina.

    Timeline and facts:

April 2 1982 - Argentina invades Falklands, imprisoning 1800 British citizens

    April 3 1982 - Thatcher announces military engagement - http://www.margaretthatcher.org/archive/displaydocument.asp?docid=110946

April 25, 1982 - Britain retakes South Georgia Island

May 2, 1982 - sinking of Belgrano, 323 died, not 600. Argentine fleet remained in port for rest of war. There are conflicting reports whether the ship was travelling away from or towards the Falklands. Make your own minds up. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukn...ng-to-the-Falklands-secret-papers-reveal.html

June 14, 1982 - end of war. 649 Argentines dead, 258 British dead.

No its not,no one was killed in the Argentine invasion or the re-taking of South Georgia. The first British dead were on the HMS Sheffield, after the Belgrano was sunk during peace talks held by the USA.The real start to the war.
Argentina invaded after Thatcher announced the scraping of the south atlantic patrol boat leading Argentina to believe the uk didn't care about the islands.

Some absolute pathetic comments on here revelling in an old lady's death. She may not have made all the correct decisions but she has done a hell of a lot more than most us in her life and being Prime minister you can't please everyone all the time. A lot of choices a prime minister has to make are going to upset different sets of people in equal measures. Everyone moaning on here I'd love to see you have the guts to be PM. And to be the first woman PM ever. Incredible lady whether you agreed with her policies or not and for that she should be respected not have cheap nasty comments made about.
