The rumours have been around for ages, but the Belgian's agent has admitted that the club are in negotiation with his client over a contract extension.
His current one still has a few years to run, yet his representative couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk up a move for Champions League football, if we don't get it.

"We have spoken to Daniel Levy about a new contract for Jan and the negotiations were very good – we hope to sort everything out very soon."
"He is happy at Tottenham and wants to play for the club. He wants to play Champions League with Tottenham and he has a very good feeling about the new manager.
"Last year they made many changes and brought in many new players and it was not so good but this season it is possible for Tottenham to qualify for the Champions League."
"Playing at the highest level is, of course, very important for Jan. If Tottenham do not qualify for the Champions League this year then we will have to see what happens next summer."

I know that this makes financial sense, at least, but I'm far from convinced that he's done enough to earn a new deal and his attitude has stunk at times.
It's also extremely disrespectful for his twat of an agent to keep harping on like this about what we all know is a financial incentive and not footballing ambition.
It's a shame that so many players seem to attach themselves to utter pillocks nowdays.
 
So he wants a new contract to earn a few extra thousand a week before he leaves us when we don't qualify for the champions league as no one was interested this summer, meaning he knows he has to play well to get his big move?
 
I try to be positive about Spurs players, but Vertonghen and his agent should consider the fact that if your fans don't like you much and you haven't played well enough to interest bigger teams, it's time to buckle down and figure out a way to make yourself more liked and more valuable, rather than mouthing off about the better fate you don't deserve either ethically or based on your level of performance.

I'm coming around to the idea that Vertonghen actually is a very good fullback, despite a lack of pace (if and when he can be bothered to try), but isn't much more than an average CB. His attacking skills are as good as just about any defender in the world, but he's only an average defender, if that. Either get him involved in the attacking play or replace him. For that matter, Vlad did a much better job of involving himself in attacking play as a CB than Vertonghen has been doing.

He's looked a million dollars at times (hence PFA nomination etc), but looked like he'd rather be doing somethiong else, somewhere else, at other times. He thought he was only good enough for Barcelona not so long ago so what kind of remuneration will he be expecting under a new contract and will Spurs be paying it?
 
No offence HIAG but for once I totally agree with you...he should be told to go **** himself...he acted like a complete **** last season imo...kind of funny in one way that he believed his own press and then found his **** performances put off whoever he thought was going to buy him...but i wish we had sold the twat
 
Well I'll not be sitting on the fence on this one. Vertonghen is without a doubt the most odious professional footballer I have ever come across. I applaud Tim Sherwood for his approach to Vertonghen's attitude when he decided he would put his WC place ahead of playing for Spurs. The guy is a complete prat and you can bet your life, he will demand a release cause in his new contract. He is lazy and arrogant and to think we sold Dawson and then offer this prick a new contract. Unbelievable.
 
I remember when we where first interested in Vertonghen, he publicly declared he wanted to join us, ahead of other teams, including the goons from what I remember so its surprising to see the development from being a player that had genuine interest in joining us and putting in some top performances, to now being viewed as someone who has little respect for the club.

It's no surprise at all. The guy is a two faced arse and the evidence has been out in the public domain for several months. And if the club now follows this new contract offer by next appointing him club captain, I will seriously go bonkers.
 
His behaviour, not only with us, but with his teammates in the Belgian national side in the recent World Cup, suggest to me than Jan Vertonghen has only one major loyalty - to Jan Vertonghen.
 
The Goons could poach him from us. If we are serious about keeping him, we better up his weekly wages to :

current wages + 1.
 
I'm always willing to see the best in our players and get behind them and I've yet to see any firm evidence that he has a bad attitude and doesn't try(feel free to point me in the direction of that though). A lot of the fans ire seemed to be an assumption that he didn't care, based on his lack of fight at times, poor form and his reaction to mistakes. The first two could be aimed at any number of our players last season and I don't believe you can draw much from his body language after mistakes or when things are going wrong.

If I'm wrong then fair enough, I don't want him here either but I do think we have to be more realistic as fans. I always like to see players who care about the club but there are those that were very happy to see the back of the likes of Holtby and Dawson, who always look like they give a **** about the club and are honoured to be here. It's very difficult for us to have it both ways because it's tough to keep the best players happy when they have chances to win more at other clubs, equally it's hard to get up to where we want to be without those players. I'd take commitment over ability everytime but it's not the impression I get from other fans going to games.

As for the CL comments, it's not nice to hear but it is realistic, I'd rather hear that then be patronised with badge kissing and comments of commitment only a month before they try to force a move to one of our rivals, a la Modric and Keane.
 
I'm glad to hear anyone defending our players as a general rule, even one that I think doesn't deserve it. I wanted very much to keep Holtby and Gylfi, partly because they have notably good attitudes and partly because I always thought they were good enough. I'm sorry we let Dawson go but unfortunately I don't think he has the pace to play the style Poch wants to play. I always tend to believe players try at least fairly hard, without many exceptions. Someone like Pete Sampras is a great example of how a languid stye does not necessarily mean someone isn't doing his best. I don't know how many times I heard him criticized for "bad body language," "no spark," etcetera, on his way to winning seven Wimbledons.

And yet: players ought to realize they are entertainers, and if you can't play well, you can at least look like you're playing hard. I thought Ade and Dier, and to a certain extent Lamela and Rose, were conspicuous by their effort against Liverpool, Conversely, after a bad loss where you were pretty much crap is no time to start talking about how you plan to leave if you don't get CL football. It's like taping a big "Kick Me" sign to your ass. After a win where you played very well is a much better time to do that. If Vertonghen wants to see how you should go about working towards moving towards a CL club, he need look no farther than Lloris, who may well be doing exactly that by making himself more valuable to us and other clubs through his excellent play and professional dedication.
