On topic, Vermaelen, or however you spell it, will scoop another load of cash for warming the physios couch for the next three years.
Whats with the habbit of signing players up to long term contracts when they are injured? Obviosuly Vermaelen is our best defender but hes barely played a game in the lasy year and a half...kinda shows how desperate we are to tie players down before they get disullusioned with our current lack of quality/results OR maybe just clever as we can sign him on the long term in the hope he recovers fully and we can evenyaully sell him on as per usual

MrGB - two reasons I think, allowinga players contract to run down to under 2 years means the risk of losing him for nothing increases, plus with the money floating around these days the lure of walking into £200k+ a week is too much for some, it forces clubs to get players on long term contracts.
There were some very interesting figures put in here a few weeks ago about the salaries of our 'squad' players, and whilst it has to be wrong to pay this type of player £50k+ a week AW has been been forced into it just incase the talented kids (B52, Fabianski, Denilson etc) turn out to be very good...

Great news. Despite his recent run of injuries, he is still a class player. Brings a much needed aggression to the team and can set the tempo with his passing from the back. He was one of the five players that I was worried about in terms of them leaving so its great news. 1 down another four to get on a long term contract.
Chesney, Vermaelen, Wilshere, RvP - The SPINE of the team for many years to come hopefully.
Chesney seems incredibly committed to the club, Vermaelen has signed, Wilshere signed a new contract last season I believe...just RvP to commit. With a successful January and a decent run of games, and a good contract offered (120k+) I'd expect him to sign up.
Wenger needs to improve the Team markedly in the January window.
