When we came on and scored twice against Liverpool I thought we had found the answer to our prayers. While I have been impressed by him technically, his goal return has been extremely disappointing. He doesn't even look like scoring. I'd like to see him taking a gamble and getting into the box more.

How do others rate him? If (and a big if at that) we are still in the Premiership next year, would you like to see him signed or would you prefer to get in a more out and out winger that would offer us some pace and directness?
 
To me it looks like yet another smallish foreign player who came to England and are feeling the effects of the crunching-tackle type game we see more here that in Europe or elsewhere, the fast-pace flailing of legs flying has made him stop to think about being safe first and not get hurt than actually get in there and play. He does have some nice skills but even those have been extinguished by close-quarters shoving and kicking, and I think he's had enough of not getting the calls on little tugs and shoves and clips on the knees, that we don't necessarily see so much in Europe and elsewhere, where they play a more stand-off, passing game in zone-spacing where he has room to turn, run, and dink his way past defenders.

Initially he looked like he was ready for the part, but since him becoming a father and all, he looks like he'd rather trot out this loan and move on.

It's a shame, that.
 
Chaa..? I'm a bit disappointed with him to be honest. But I'd still prefer that we kept him than Hoilett, Phillips and SWP - maybe with a rest he'll be better. He and Isla often both seem better when they play together, hopefully playing with Karate too will help him.

Why cant he or anybody else play the No 10 role. We either play two upfront and static four in midfield with usually two holding or one upfront and one behind..

We have been crying out for a link player with the front two..... I would play 442 away and 4-3-1-2 at home without wingers as Hoillet and Phillips have done eff all all season. If Vargas is one of the front two then Kranjkar or Fer in No 10 role..........
 
Look at his goal record. The chile national team aside, he's never been a goal scorer. I rate him highly however, technically very good and always willing.
 
I like him and he links up very well with Isla. I think he'll chip in with a few goals yet.
 
The only good thing about him playing RM is his link up play with Isla. Like I said on another thread a lot of Austins goals have come from the link up play of these two. Hes there to create goal scoring opportunities and compared to the rest of the team id say hes doing well.
 
He's playing where Isla should be playing (ok perhaps a little further forward). It's like ****ing musical chairs. You only have to see how well they play fo Chile to know that they are decent players (not quite top drawer). That's it - can we have 10 more Chileans and Jorge Sampaoli to manage them please?
 
I hate the condescending way that Redknapp always describes Vargas. He really is a complete dinosaur!
 
Vargas probably had his best game for us against swansea. He's been one of his most solid and consistent performers this season.

This is despite it being made more difficult for him because we are increasingly play football from the dark ages. His clever turns and quick and incisive passing moves normally with Isla have been one of the few bright sparks this season.

Problems with our team lie with the 2 players in the middle who because of the warped old fashioned love affair most Rangers fans have with try hard no talent players, have received a lot of praise this year: Henry and Barton.

They are incapable of retaining possession or playing clever through balls or any creativity really. This is linked to our poor away form.

In a side which played football he'd have even more success. Any criticism of him is harsh to say the least.

You seem to completely miss the point of a holding midfield player like Henry. We would have lost the Swansea game by 2 or 3 without him.
 
HAve to agree with both PD and Col on this one. For me he's a great little player. I think if you put him in the Swans team or another team that plays football then he'd have a great time. Being hampered by our style im afraid.

As for Henry, it think its harsh to put him down. The bloke can clearly read the game and mops up. Never tries anything above his ability level and has been huge for us, but then again i remember many slating Makele when he signed for Chelsea saying he did nothing. Look how he turned out.

If we dont sign Vargas there will be no shortage of offers from other better Prem clubs <ok>

Think the point your missing is that it isn't good enough to dodge the responsibility and con his way to lower expectations. Particularly in a 2 man midfield to simply be a 'holding midfielder', where you don't have to worry that you aren't very good at passing and moving and all season you won't create chances or chip in with assists for me isn't good enough.

Too simple to say we would have lost against Swansea. A better centre midfielder who can help us keep possession and create chances then you can't say that we wouldn't have beaten Swansea

Game has moved on the Makele days. That type of player doesnt really exist in the modern game. Makele was a complete separate class of his own. Nowadays the 'holding midfielder' needs to be able to get lots of touches and be heavily involved in keeping the playing going and passing it forwards as well as backwards and sideways.

Really do think Henry gets away with such limited expectations of what he needs to do to contribute. This was especially shown up against Sheffield united and most of last season when we were the ones who the pressure was on to create and dominate and not simply contain and survive

I agree that ideally the holding player should be more like Fabregas. Unfortunately, we are QPR and we're unlikely to attract anyone anywhere near that level.
I'd like Fer to play more centrally, but I fear he would cough up possession too much and I can't see him playing central unless he's behind the striker. We have played 4-4-2 to suit Charlie and our midfield possession etc has suffered as a consequence imo.

Well in that point there, you forget that they have Alexis up front and sideways of them, that industrious, skilled, roaming, never-tiring player in Alexis Sanchez. We don't have quite that, eh? Makes a helluva difference to know you've got Alexis threatening at every turn, that frees up the rest of the players because the enemy always have to double or triple up on Alexis and therefore the space is created. We don't play that way enough.
