This is, apparently, what did happen for this tournament. A group of refs from around the world all went on training courses, re VAR, and then ref'ed in under 20s tournaments etc. using it. The best 9 (or whatever the number of refs at the World Cup is) then got chosen for the gig. So what you see out there is, according to FIFA, the best refs in the business that have been trained in the new system.
There are problems with VAR but the best way of testing it and ironing out the issues is to use it in meaningful matches and tournaments. You shouldn't say 'It's not perfect so lets not introduce it' It's the same with driverless cars. We shouldn't wait until there is no possibility of an accident happening before we introducing it. Even with the technology as it is today I guarantee you if all cars on the road were driverless there would be less accidents on the road.
I have absolutely no reservations about VAR now, after it overturned refs offside decision against South Korea and gave them the first goal against Germany.
VAR might well end up deciding who lifts the trophy. What a crazy thing that would be. Great to see it knock the Germans out too.
Agree fully. I found it interesting a few months ago when that driverless car hit someone in America. The news was all over it and going on about "safety" issues. Lets just forget that the current alternative is much much worse shall we...
