Think it should stay but we need a better rule for offside - a toenail off with a line not accurate enough to truly differentiate those margins is not what the offside rule was brought for - and it's open to fiddling. Handball - clear it up - it's ridiculous. VAR knob heads - please get ex-pros / managers in there alongside a "rules" expert. The current crop are not fit for purpose. Aside, I think the positives do still currently outweigh the benefits.
This, plus a time limit, fixes most of the issues. Ref gives pen, was that right or not? Ref gives yellow, should it be red? Then semi-automate offside. Done.
Problem is the vast majority of decisions don't have a clear 'right' or 'wrong' as almost every rule is subjective rather than factual.
Not sure tbh - the only one I'd agree with is handball - was it deliberate, did it hit another part of the body first, was it the third last player to take a shower this morning whose arm it hit in the lead up to a goal? Who ****ing knows what's going on with that rule! But the rest - that VAR is supposed to be used for (red cards/penalties) - are pretty black and white though: studs showing - red card, preventing a goal scoring opportunity (outside the box) - red card, preventing a goalscoring opportunity (inside the box) - yellow and penalty. Offside - yes or no. etc. When you say subjective can you give an example? Again using the Gordon/Amrabaat penalty shout - what is subjective about this and how have they got it wrong:
Red cards can be determined by 'excessive force' or being 'out of control' - both of which are subjective where different people could have different opinions on an incident. Penalties/fouls are also subjective because it's a contact sport and therefore contact doesn't (or shouldn't) automatically means a foul. See it every week where fans are split on whether something is a penalty or not. In terms of offside then being in an offside position is factual of course but being in that position doesn't constitute an offence in it's own right. There can subjective elements such as interfering with play etc The only absolutely factual things are the pitch markings and things such as throw in, corners etc in terms of who the ball came off. Almost everything else opinion forms a part of decision making. Not really interested in talking individual decisions and there'll clearly be some that are more obvious than others but most fall into a grey area where different people have different views of an incident.
If they scrap it completely everyone will cry when they lose points for goals that were offside and pens and red cards via no contact dives. Essentially they need to keep VAR for those clear and obvious situations and let everything else go. Please add a vote option for that.
I wouldn't There's no chance it'll go though, as you allude to there's too many people who won't accept an offside goal going against them now. Especially amongst TV fans. This season has been brilliant. When there's a controversial decision made everyone just gets over it and gets on with the game. Almost as if that worked fine for well over a century.
That can't be entirely true because it was brought in to start with.. it's just been ott. I can distinctly remember fans complaining every week, but I don't like the reviewing of everything. One thing I absolutely hated was no contact dives for pens...cheating basically and that's gone.. they try sometimes but I like that not existing. Each to their own.
It's staying, 19 of the 20 clubs voted to keep it. Correct decision for me, video replays showing what happened can only be a good thing, the people looking at it are the problem.
At least it won't be a goal that's 2 yards offside or a red card and pen without contact. Look at the positives
I just think it's easily forgotten what VAR has got rid of.. definitely being done ott though.. just the big calls please like offside by a yard and pens and sending offs that are missed or given without any contact please.
