As far as I am aware 'the game' is still about getting the football in the back of the net. Shearer has few equals in that respect, over a consistent period of time and in one of the toughest leagues in the world. £70m+ for me all day long. Formations may have changed and evolved but I don't think that there is one team in the EPL that would not have Shearer if he were in his prime today. He was far more than a target man and suggesting that he couldn't cut it in todays game does the man a huge disservice in my opinion. A virtually guaranteed 20+ goals a year would have any manager building a team to his strengths. Its all about end product for a striker and Shearer delivered far more than not. Dropping the shoulder or meandering, mazzy runs mean **** all if you cant bulge the back of the net.

Shearer is the best striker the EPL has had so far. Its there in the record books for all to see.

If shearer had joined Barca or Real he would have been regarded as one of the greatest strikers ever, not just English. He would have walked La Liga.

    Worth today - £75m

    Worth compared to Sterling's valuation - £375m

What he'd go for - Free. Ashley wouldn't give him th wages he'd want and he'd leave.

If I could maybe join in.

I would say Shearer was incredible, there would be very very few strikers who are better that have played in england (I would class Henry as better personally). I think he is much more comparable in price to Suarez (although completely different type of players) but Suarez would probably fit in better with the best teams in the world. Having considered that, Shearer, in his prime would have to be around the 60m mark.

Shearer is a legend, global icon. He only stayed with us because of his love, he could easily have played for any team in the world.

going by todays market you'd expect him to fetch somewhere around £60m-£80m. teams these days prefer their flair players. shows why no one has really bid for austin as he's the "old fashioned" striker
