Newcastle have been linked again with French midfielder William Vainqueur, who we were linked with earlier this month. The player was born in Neuilly-sur-Marne in France (where else? ) and started his career at Nantes, before joining Belgium club Standard Liege in August of 2011 on a five year contract, and he has one cap for the France U21 side, which he picked up back in 2009.
The defensive midfielder stands 5â11″ tall and has so far played 66 times for Liege and scored four goals in the Jupiler Pro League. Earlier in the month Southampton were also interested in the player but weâre not sure whether the south coast club are still interested in Vainqueur.
Newcastle could be interested because it seems the player has recently fallen out with the Liege coach Mircea Rednic, who said this about his player a couple of weeks ago:
âIâve told Vainqueur he needs to take more responsibility.â
Newcastle are preparing an offer for the 24-year-old midfielder, according to the Belgian daily Derniere Heure.
Vainqueur is said to be rated at around £2.5M, and he has a five year deal at Liege which runs out in 2016, but it does seem that Newcastle are still trying to bring in new players in January.
Of course Newcastle could be interested in the player for a summer transfer, although the club have already brought in five Frenchman so far in this January transfer window.
Heâs another Frenchman â so we suppose that makes it possible he could be joining Newcastle before next Friday rolls around.
