Remember playing footer in a game at the sports center many years ago where a teamate bust a rib and punctured his lung and he was in big trouble straight away. The treatment has no doubt changed but way back then his injured lung was filled with some gunge to prevent it functioning and help it repair.
Ouch.

Generally requires no specific treatment, severe pneumothorax requires chest drain and continuous drainage. The really bad one is tension pneumothorax- defect in the lung forms a one way valve allowing air into the thorax but not out. = life threatening emergency.

Well, I hope that the Palace fans who booed him off the pitch feel suitably embarrassed.

Vin

As should the ref who refused to let the doctor come on to the pitch. I've never seen that before - he let the physio on but stopped the doc by holding his hand up!! Shocking ....................

We don't know what the physio said to the referee. How on earth was the referee supposed to know he had a punctured lung? He walked off the pitch as well so the physio may well have decided that a doctor wasn't required.

Dave - don't criticize the refs

Tom, are you sat next to me on Sunday? I'm going to bring my ref bashing stick :emoticon-0110-tongu

Either of you going to the Farmers before the game?

When I had the problem I was given a gadget in which I had to blow into at regular intervals to keep the damaged lung inflated while it healed, it worked fine. I still have it as a souvenir.

@SimonPeach: Had it confirmed that #SaintsFC's Shane Long will be out for four-six weeks. He fractured a couple of ribs but didn't sustain punctured lung

DTLW, you liar

How unusual. Knee-jerk reaction, I suspect.
