You would be barking to say that Crufts is a ****e atmosphere. When Jet won in 2011 it was the biggest shock since the Labrador didn't win in 1985!
Danny Baker isn’t racist, and genuinely didn’t realise the implications of the monkey joke he retweeted. When he did, he took the message down.
Why is that unpopular? Seems perfectly reasonable, at least he didn't try and defend it and carry on?
Very much doubt he's actually racist. What he is though is ****ing stupid, he committed suicide posting that. No way is the BBC (or indeed the majority of the modern world) going to find that joke funny. Must have been pissed, has to have been.
He’s brought a ****storm down on his head mate, hadn’t you noticed? It takes a certain leap of faith to accept his explanation, but I do. Many won’t, which I why I chose this thread to comment on.
I put it down to stupidity as well. No crime against being stupid though otherwise most of the Arsenal board would be in jail!
It's a strange one for sure. When I was younger if he had referred to my baby as a monkey, I doubt i would have been too happy about it, so I see the offence on Harry & Meghan as well as Archie (taking out any racial aspect). Then you have the racial side of things, only Baker knows what his thoughts were at the time and I doubt any one can claim what his intentions were, unless they've become mind readers. I very much doubt he would have posted it with racial intentions, unless he was on a suicide mission to lose his job. Having said all that, my thoughts also are of concern how easily people want to be offended, maybe rightly so on this ocassion but let me say this, anyone remember the outrage after the assassiantion of Hebdo and his colleagues, after no holds barred political cartoons, he even openly admitted he only did provocation. A provocation that cost him and others their lives to the outrage of the world. But this is the same world that wants to be outraged in it's own right at anything tweeted which loses people not the extremity of their lives but their livelihoods. I'm certainly not defending Danny Baker, but questioning in the same light on how it would be ok maybe to burn an effigy publically of a political figure (events such as Lewes) but not to mock a Royal situation as an individual. Having said all that, DB was a dick
It's a difficult one. I think it's about intent. You can usually tell from a person's general views over a period of time whether an individual comment has racist undertones. If it's a one off and depending on the person's follow-up action, I prefer to take the view it wasn't as intended. Another good example of this is Liam Neeson's interview where he said he went out looking for any black man to kill. I don't think from everything else he's said in public (I know of) that he holds racist views. At best he made an error of judgement, even if it was a frank and open admission of his past emotional state, OR the cynic in me says he did it to cause controversy for his new movie but I'm not convinced about that.
My parents called me a monkey when I was young. I don't think it is that unusual to call a child a monkey without having racist intent. I know my wife's family did the same with her too... Babies, especially hairy ones do look a little simian. With that said, if you are a public figure you have to be an idiot and totally insensitive to use terms like "monkey", "ape", "gorilla", etc to refer to someone, especially someone with some non-white heritage. You have to know that you're not going to get benefit of the doubt... And you will offend some people.
I did actually think that, parents calling their children 'you little monkey' but i couldn't think of any direct examples. Again that was meant as mischievous and as far as i'm aware never had any racial connotations...
Danny has been sacked by the beeb before and like before I bet he'll rock up on talk ****e. he'll be their for a couple of years then return (quietly) to Auntie
