I'm still a firm believer in, it's not what you know, but who you know. Or get out and make it happen. Obviously if you want to go into medicine etc, this does not apply. but some of the degrees available, just what use are they? For example... Human Resources and Personnel Development...

My brother recently moved to Cambridge and one of the things that list doesn't tell you is that houses in the nice areas get offers the day they go on the market, the house they bought he ended up going to see for 10 minutes on a lunchbreak as he had a text alert on his phone that morning. Offered and accepted that day without his wife getting to see it and neither of them having had the time to see all the rooms. They'd missed out on a handful of houses that went on the market and had offers in under 3 hours... I don't fancy that kind of stress thanks. ps. Average wage in Derby simply has to be wrong, am I missing something there?
Money loaned from the student loans company doesn't have to be declared when applying for loans/mortgages according to banks I've had mortgages with. I've never had to tell them and as such can say with certainty it hasn't affected my ability to get money now. That only applies to loans from the Student Loans people themselves, any other debt you get into can count against you of course. I went after tuition fees came in but when they were £3000 a year, I worked as a barman a few nights each week, had a job every summer and had no debt after my 5 years at uni other than £7k student loans debt. £9000 a year it is now is just insane for many courses.
Student loans should be declared, but they are not usually taken into consideration. All loans are shown on the credit reports that lenders use, whether they're declared or not, and any that are not are usually looked at unfavourably (as if they're a deliberate non disclosure). I've had some applications that have been declined because of 'forgotten' debts, including one that 'forgot' to declare his other mortgage . . . . for £160,000c
Difficult question. I have a history degree and post graduate diploma in quantity surveying. I would not have been able to have a career in surveying without the degree as the company I worked for would not even consider other people. However, I have left that career, and I am seeking career advice to try and work out work to do next. So as it stands, I could be where I literally am now without the degree - but in a lot of work you need a piece of paper to open doors. Depends on the career, how good you are and who you know. Either have a degree or slog your way to the top. I wouldn't have missed the 3 years or experiences though.
Those of you mentioning debt - you only pay back what you can afford in relation to your wages. Its not like you have to pay it off in 10 years in full or be made bankrupt. I've got £11k left on mine.
Depends on the field of study and what she wants to do in the future tbh. I did a degree in Sydney of Mechanical & Mechatronical engineering. I got into the oil field to earn some coin, and so far its paid off. Aussie uni fee's are slightly different than the UK ones though. I have plenty of mates from School in Scotland I went to, and the vast majority of them are doing nothing to do with their degree. In fact, alot of them we're sick of it by the time they finished. In todays current climate though, I would say yes if it was Medicine, Engineering, & Finance (to a limit). If its for something like Woman's Studies, give her a slap. Same goes for Liberal Arts or something like that. She'll be lumped with a big debt, and she wont get **** all from it. Life experiences are all well and good... take a gap year, go to Peru and see Machu Pichu. You dont need to get yourself into debt for life experiences. Pretty soon in the UK, Australia, Europe, & USA there will be a **** load of bin men with degrees. What the world needs is people with a trade. Over here we call them cashed up Bogans. Builders, brickies, Roofers, sparkies. All of them are racking it in. Mines, rigs, building, construction. That's what is being sought after nowadays. Worst comes to worse.. get a trade in hairdressing. Always need them
There's a lad I went to school with moved to Aus. He's a welder by trade & last I heard off him he was ****ing coining it in. I don't think he has any intentions of coming back.
So if you want to be a lawyer or a doctor then you need a degree - no **** sherlock! (sorry couldn;t resist)! I disagree mind haslam - I am earning more now than most of the people I spent time with at uni - only 2 of the 26 that started and finished the degree course earn more than me (although I've lost touch with half a dozen or so but still earn more than 90% of the rest!) and I dropped out after 2 years and got married. Have worked ever since and never claimed benefits of any description (I was 22 when I dropped out) - of course you need a degree if your career path wants to take you in a certain direction (doctor/solicitor/kids teacher etc.). Any job I apply for I look for the words "equivalent experience" - I have 8 years NHS teaching experience along with 14 years customer service training experience - no degree required as I fit the criteria perfectly - and when I applied for the jobh I do now, 4 other candidates had degrees (I knew them all) and I got the job down to experience!
Fair enough. Thanks mate that's really good to know as it has been a source of worry for our lass who is anticipating around 40k of debt 3 years from now when (touchwood) we would be looking at getting a place.
Without understanding history, we are doomed to repeat the failures of the past. The least we can do is learn from the lessons of history. The study of history is no less important than Science, Engineering or Medicine.

Cheers mate, just needed a break and I got that by visiting my birth place for the first time with my Mother, was nice. Just paid for my lass to go down to London for a couple of nights with a west end show and tickets for the zoo (I've been a twat lately). Mind while she's there, I'm off to an apartment in Amsterdam for 5 days
