Somersby was really disappointing today and his proximity to Master Minded on a number of occasions must be a huge concern to fans of that one's King George chances. I can't be having either in the race to be honest. I had a look at Master Minded's form, and, whilst he is currently rated 178 officially, I think it is relatively easy to argue that he hasn't run to anything much better than 170ish for a couple of years now. The Melling Chase is the one possible exception. I think they both have it all to do and the ratings would seem to confirm that. My idea of the 1-2-3 is Long Run, Kauto Star and Captain Chris, not necessarily in that order.
I have searched and searched but can't find it anywhere. He was majestic that day and I'd love to see it again. I have still see it just the once but it is still fresh in my mind. A brilliant performance.
You can probably see it on the Racing Post website, though you might have to pay 20p. I'm amazed that it isn't on YouTube
We can all sit here and say Master Minded won't stay 3 miles, How do we know exactly? When Ruby pulled up in the Melling he said he thought He'd stay but wasn't sure until he got to the track and raced. Hes got an incredible record going right handed and if he stays he will annihilate Long Run for speed. Long Run is nowhere near as quick as Kauto was at the same age and I remember the same doubts over Kauto Star before he stepped up in trip and look what hes done over further than 2 miles? More or less re-written the book. Long Run is clearly talented but I for one am still holding My judgement on him becoming the next superstar of National Hunt. Kauto Star as repelled horses for years, Long Run couldn't even win the Betfair on his seasonal re-appearance a feat Kauto as achieved many times before bar the run before beating Beef or Salmon at Haydock... Anyway I doubt we will be seeing Kauto Star at Kempton, I don't see the need if the Nicholls team feel Master Minded is a King George horse get Kauto fresh and primed for Cheltenham and let another horse carry Clive Smith's hopes of winning the King George again, I think Master Minded as a huge chance given he stays
Not sure why people are even still mentioning Somersby, why does this horse get so much attention? What has he actually achieved? He had one flukey race, were McCoy messed up the ride on MM, and he ran MM close, and that's the horse's only claim to fame. I told you all long before todays Peterbrough that Somersby was a 2nd tier chaser, and that was proven without a doubt today
It's the step up in trip that is the hope. He was always outpaced and always staying on in top class 2m company. He was staying on at Aintree over 2 and a half as well. Been screaming 3 miles so he is worth the chance at the prices- that is my logic. He was poor today though no question. If he is well beaten at Kempton, then we will know where we stand. But I'm just holding fire with judgement at the moment and will play him e/w in the King George. Master Minded will go very close if he stays.
Have to say, as a MM 'believer' I'd have been happier seeing Somersby hose up in this contest today but racing is a funny game. If literal reading of the formlines always produced winners there's be more winning punters and less successful bookmakers around... so I'm not giving up hope just yet. Maybe Somersby is one of those horse who just doesn't win when he should. There's been no shortage of them, Norse Dancer on the flat from few years ago was one such animal and there are many others. I'm sure the forum can think of other examples. Re: price I wish I'd backed him after his flop first time out at 10s but hey ho! I'll wait to the day and I'm sure he'll drift out to 6 or 7 at least irrespective of Kauto being there or not. Long Run was second fav last year and was about 7s in the morning before shortening before the off. I'm sure Shergy with his previous bookmaking knowledge can offer an insightful opinion on likely price fluctuations? I'll not be backing him at current prices anyways especially considering ante-post risk!!
That "wonderful" Melling Chase won by Master Minded was run on true "Good" going and yet was 9.5 seconds above standard time. They crawled round and it turned into a sprint. Albertas Run was still knackered from Cheltenham, then followed Somersby and Tartak in close proximity. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......................................
Where've you been RV? On a Rustler Burger frenzy? If Master Minded wins the King George I'll show my arse on here
So it's 4/1 that Oddy bears his arse on not606. Those are firghteningly short odds of this happening LOL!! But seriously yes- you have a point about the Aintree race. Funnily enough though I think the quicker they go the better he is. Watch his 08 Champion Chase- when he gets momentum and jumps them so cleanly at speed, he's a monster. But obviously the stamina remains an unknown.
That was also 3 years ago Toppy - he's been nowhere near since Maybe that once at Newbury in the Game Spirit until he hammered the last. But what sort of benchmark was Voy Por Ustedes in those days? Hmmmmm............... not that great I reckon
Side note from todays race- any idea whether Somersby's lolling tongue could have affected him? Is it a regular thing that happens to him?
Odddy been busy working for once rather than sitting there in my chair eating burgers . Not had the chance to look at much of the racing. You had any winners this week ?
Done me spuds on The nightingale today mate. Thought he was nailed on against that donkey Somersby and I reckon he would have pissed it. Looked like one of those inexplicable falls as well - didn't hit the fence, didn't comedown steep, nothing. Probably just slipped on landing. Couple of winners earlier in the week so not too bad. Good to see you working hard. You see Man U last night? Worst performance I've seen from them in years........................
I like the Nightingale would have backed him today probs mate so glad I didn't get a look glad you have been in the winners earlier in the week. Utd were terrible - the young lad for Basle looks an awesome player SHAKIRI
Night Odddy I will take R Madrid No time to study the racing in detail. I like Garde Mon Parrain and Sam Winner from a quick look good luck fella
