Theresa May Will Remain PM Until Brexit Is Delivered, Says Philip Hammond
"She is a person with a strong sense of duty."
Theresa May will remain prime minister until she has taken the UK out of the European Union, Chancellor Philip Hammond has insisted.
The chancellor spoke as cross-party negotiations to try to break the Brexit deadlock took place in Whitehall on Friday after the UK’s exit date from the EU was delayed until October 31.
Hammond told the Bloomberg news agency: “The prime minister has said that she will leave once she has done the deal and taken us out of the European Union.
“But, as far as I know, she doesn’t have any intention of leaving until that deal is done. So, she is a person with a strong sense of duty.
“She feels that she has got a duty, and an obligation to the British people to deliver Brexit and she will certainly want to make good on that obligation.”
Asked about the implications of a Tory leadership contest, Hammond said: “Let’s be honest, we have already got people jockeying for position to succeed her, but that’s just one of those things.”
The chancellor said Labour was not clear on whether it wanted a new Brexit referendum.
Hammond said: “The Labour Party itself isn’t really clear yet whether it wants to argue for a second confirmatory referendum.
“Some people in Labour do, some people in Labour are very strongly opposed to it.
“So, they have got to decide whether it’s an ask yet… in these discussions.
“And then if they did, what that would mean would be some kind of process by which the House of Commons was invited to decide on this issue.
“Now, some people in the Commons are very keen on a second referendum, but some are strongly against.
“So, I think this is a very open question at the moment whether they are going to ask for it, and if they do, what would actually happen when it is voted on in the Commons.”
The prime minister has made clear she intends to bring her Brexit deal back to the Commons for a fourth time after EU leaders agreed to extend the Article 50 withdrawal process to October 31.
No.10 is still hoping they can get a deal through parliament in time to avoid the need for Britain to vote in elections to the European Parliament on May 23.
The UK is now formally on track to hold elections, having informed the European authorities ahead of Friday’s deadline that it would be taking part in the ballots occurring across the continent from May 23-26.
However, it is possible for the vote to be cancelled right up to the day before polling if a withdrawal deal is agreed by MPs.
Preparations for the polls were stepping up a gear, with Nigel Farage launching his new Brexit Party in Coventry.
The former Ukip leader said the existing parties should “fear the electorate” who feel “betrayed” by the failure to deliver EU withdrawal almost three years after the 2016 referendum.

there needs to be a serious reality check all over.

it must be clear that the withdrawal deal is the only deal and will be the only terms on which the eu leave with a deal. period.

all the debates and options in the world wont change that.

the reality is the Tories sold their soul to the dup and the dup have decided for their own reasons to break the agreement made when it suits them and not other times. this has enabled other Tories to break their whip when it suits and use the dup as an excuse.

The parliament don't seem to care about reality it seems.

Theresa May had no mandate to negotiate a deal with the EU based on her own xenophobic red lines and her husband's investment portfolio.

    She should be removed immediately.

    A) no

    B) yes

A majority of any type, even one bartered by bribing loons at the cost of a billion in extra slush funds gives her the mandate to do what she liked. The fact is the rats deserted her when they shockingly realised the eu were not rolling over. It was the UK that offered the backstop as a UK wide backstop.

It'll be interesting to see what happens next

On that basis that discounts about 630 MPs in one swoop! We would be left with the admirable Lady Herman, a Northern Irish Independent MP and Chuka´s group. Sounds good to me. !

I'm not South, I'm Midlands. I don't affiliate with any political party, nor do I care enough on how Brexit goes to pass a serious comment on here. What will be, will be.

Brexit WAR: Boris Johnson attacks Lammy and calls for a TRUE Brexit to end the ‘MADNESS’
BORIS Johnson has hit back following David Lammy’s explosive remarks yesterday
The former Foreign Secretary responded to the Labour MP’s explosive claims linking Mr Johnson to Steve Bannon, Italy’s Matteo Savini and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. In an incredible rant on The Andrew Marr Show, Mr Lammy not only linked Mr Johnson to those men but also claimed the BBC “should not allow this extreme far-right Fascism”. In response to the Labour MP, Mr Johnson not only claimed Brexit will eventually be delivered but it will also end the attacks from both sides.

Time to consign Boris Johnson to the rubbish bin/or jungle where he can shine in the next series of "Get me out of here." Hopeless politician, totally out of touch with most of the UK population with his prehstoric ideas, and never a leader in a million years.

Not naughty boy Joey Barton. In fact it is best to outdo the right-wingers in politics with superior arguments. ideas, and actions. New Labour did this brilliantly!!!

'Their first decision was to go on holiday': EU fears UK will waste Brexit delay
A top EU figure has said he fears Britain will waste its latest Brexit reprieve and "run down the clock" once again.

European Parliament Brexit co-ordinator Guy Verhofstadt told the European Parliament that the bloc's decision to grant a delay until the end of October risked prolonging the uncertainty.

He said the six-month extension to Article 50 is "too near for a substantial rethink of Brexit and at the same time too far away to prompt any action".
