There is something wrong in the formats of the European competitions if you have to play a team you have already played in the league phase?
Nathan, Hove

That Champions League draw is a travesty. All the decent teams are on the left and Arsenal in theory have an easy run to the final... this format is a joke.

What's the point t of getting high in Champions League as it doesn't benefit top finishing teams.. Absolutely disgraceful format..
Ste

Good points, well made imo

It is a bit strange to have 6 previous winners in the top half and only one in the bottom half.

It's certainly an unforeseen flaw with the new system.

True, the group stage is more entertaining and instead of being dead rubbers, the last few fixtures are actually really exciting as most are make or break.

But the cost of this is the number of huge teams who don't finish in the top 8 and then get drawn against teams who did, who probably shouldn't have been there.

Us, Chelsea and Sporting (and possibly Barca too) had no business finishing as high as we did. It was a nice achievement, until you realise that Real, PSG and Atletico are the teams displaced as a result, who you will probably meet and get knocked out by anyway soon after.

< the purpose of a system is what it does >

You are over-rating Atletico I think...their record of winning UEFA major trophies is identical to ours.

Eh?

That's a very strange way to measure current quality.

Does that mean Parma are as good as us, because they've won as many European trophies?

Someone should let Lyon know that Ipswich are better than them.

Atletico have won 8 by the way, twice as many as us.

They are not in the current top 8 clubs in Europe by any measure so why should they finish in the top 8 in the CL rather than us?
They have won the Cup Winners Cup once and the UEFA/Europa three times. The same as us and less recently.

Other UEFA last 16 draws (PL clubs) ...

EL :

Nottingham Forest v Midtjylland
Lille v Aston Villa

EL2 :

Crystal Palace v AEK Larnaca
