Sorry to burst your bubble Swords but, you are WRONG

We used to be a home country before 1922 but we left the UK and became an independent country then and have been completely separate since. Did we ever play in the home internationals? No, why? Because we aren't a "home country".

    Will you EVER realise that?????

You're talking through your Arris. Home Country is just a term used to encapsulate the Countries of the British Isles because if you said "British Countries" you'd technically be wrong because the ROI left the UK in the 1922. It takes the politics out of it to keep nationalists like yourself happy. It clearly hasn't worked...

Besides, you knew exactly what Killy meant so why would it bother you so much to pull him up on such an insignificant, congenial term used to encapsulate the whole of these islands?

Actually, don't bother. I already know the answer:

We're still in the British Isles though aren't we, so that must count for something that no other country can claim.

I'd much rather sing that than "rule Britannia" which is what you sing.

The home countries are, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Republic of Ireland is not and never has been a "home country".

They are the facts of the matter. Who is talking through their arris?????????? You, as usual.

I am right and you know it. If you can't accept those facts, maybe you should move over the water and you can wave your union jack with pride over there. People like you give us Dubs a bad name. Ever wonder why people from the country call us Jackeens? You are a classic example of a Jackeen who can't accept we are an independent country. The bitterness on Swords part comes from the fact that we are not a "home country". I know a good counsellor if you need help to get over that fact Swords.

Why is that? Because I accept reality and don't live in a bubble believing I live in a separate neighbouring country? There are planes and ferries if you wish to live there Swords.

Fingy gimme a break would ye? I know its a different bloody Country. That's got nothing to do with a friendly term Killy used to describe the Countries that were playing last night - and was wishing them all well by the way.

There's a World of difference between being patriotic and being a zealous, pernickety nationalist.

Go on Swords, say it, we are not a "home country". Read the definition from Wikipedia that Tramore posted (thanks Tramore). Only in rugby to appease the players from the North do they call Ireland a "home country". We are talking soccer (football) and the Republic of Ireland has never been considered a "home country". You know that, I know that. Go on, just admit it, I was right all along.

I'd rather be a "zealous, pernickety nationalist" than a brown tongue West Brit which is what you are.

That's it. Its official. You've lost the plot.

A ridiculous argument over a nothing issue.

If you need directions to North Wall for the ferry, just let me know. I'll ask Irish Ferries to have a union jack ready for you when you board.

PS, well done Swordsie, you lose the argument and then run away.

Somebody has to put these people in their place Kingdom. We all know who is right. Swords has for the last few years tried to convince everybody on here that we are a "home country" and he is completely wrong. I hope the debate has now concluded and he refrains from using the term again.

Interestingly, it looks like there was a joint Northern and Republic team in the Home Championship until 1950 although it's not a term I particularly use and so wouldn't comment on that.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ireland_national_football_team_(1882%E2%80%931950)

I can see why it might be a divisive subject although I do keep an eye out for the ROI team due to a good number of familiar faces.
