Sunderland Under-21s were narrowly defeated 3–2 by Southampton at Staplewood in Premier League 2 on Friday evening.

Ian Poveda twice found the net for Graeme Murty’s side, while the hosts scored through Jayden Moore, Nicholas Oyekunle and Romeo Akachukwu to take the points on the south coast.

Both sides created chances during an even first half. Harrison Jones, Felix Scott and Poveda all tested Saints goalkeeper Dylan Moody, while Isaac Allan made several excellent saves at the other end. Baylee Dipepa struck the post late in the half as the sides went into the break level at 0–0.

The deadlock was broken on 56 minutes when Poveda struck from distance, drilling a superb right-footed effort into the bottom corner to give Sunderland the lead.

Southampton equalised on 65 minutes, Jayden Moore heading home Max Fry’s set-piece, before Nicholas Oyekunle completed the turnaround two minutes later, converting from close range after Allan initially denied him.

The Saints added a third on 82 minutes when Akachukwu headed in Samuel Tabares’ delivery. Poveda responded with his second of the evening just three minutes later, finishing clinically from the right side of the box after good work by Trey Ogunsuyi to set up a tense finale.

Sunderland pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, with Jack Whittaker and Ben Middlemas both going close, but Southampton held on despite six minutes of added time.

A significant positive for the young Black Cats came as Ethan Moore returned to action, replacing Felix Scott on 61 minutes to make his first appearance since 19 March 2023 following a long-term injury lay-off.

Graeme Murty’s side will look to respond when they return to action next Friday evening, hosting West Ham United U21 at Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground.
