The two teams will meet at Victoria Park on Saturday 27th July, 3pm. Opposition Hartlepool United finished 12th in the 2023-24 National League campaign with 17 wins, 9 draws and 20 defeats. There was a change in the dugout over the summer following the departure of previous Black Cat forward, Kevin Phillips as Darren Sarll took the reins. The former midfielder started his youth playing career with Ipswich Town before featuring for the likes of Bedford Town, Hemel Hempstead and Chesham United. Sarrl began coaching in 2006 with Stevenage in various youth and reserve roles before joining Brentford. A first-team manager role and a return to the ‘Boro arose in 2012 where Sarrl was given the permanent job after a spell as caretaker. Most recently, the 41-year-old has managed Yeovil and Woking, gaining play-off places with both before heading to County Durham in April 2024. Sunderland AFC Under-21s added another 90 minutes in the tank as pre-season preparations continued against Hartlepool United. Graeme Murty named a side consisting of Under-21s and first-team players with Luis Hemir leading the line. Despite a strong start for the young Black Cats, the hosts took the lead with 17 minutes played. A cross into the area was dispatched by the head of Mani Dieseruvwe. Hartlepool had their second just two minutes later as Tom Parkes nicked the ball away from Hemir before firing into the top corner. Tommy Watson looked to pull one back just before the break, but the 18-year-old’s low effort was well blocked. Watson continued to threaten in the second half going through one-on-one but was once again denied by the legs of Joel Dixon. Harrison Jones’ strike moments later then travelled wide as the Lads continued to threaten. A trialist forward for the Poolies added a third with 10 minutes to play as Graeme Murty’s side will next travel to Mansfield in the concluding fixture of the Central League on Friday. SAFC: Richardson, Lavery (Jenson Jones 85), Bell, Crompton, Bainbridge, Matete (Jaydon Jones 70), Middlemas, H.Jones (Mitchell 87), Watson (Ogunsuyi 75), Bennette, Hemir Unused subs: Chibueze, Walsh
Matty Young played 45 minutes against Everton for Salford today. That’ll do him the world of good at his age, some really good experienced players in that Everton side.
Sunderland XI playing at Hebburn Town on Thursday night, fixture just announced. Presume it’ll be mostly u21 players.
Went to this fixture I think 2/3 years ago and it was practically an u18 side. First time I seen Rigg playing though, best player on the park and he was maybe 14
