He could also leap like a salmon. The Iceman did a great job for us as the lone striker. He was tough all right, but not especially big.

Aguero and previously Messi are the only one's I can think of. Not sure we can play their brand of football just yet.
Can you name any small players in the premier league or championship who are currently regularly playing up front on their own?
Don't think its realistic to expect that we wont need to hoof the ball clear a few times a game at least. Not necessarily because we're playing bad football but because its a necessary thing for a defender to do or because its not possible for the keeper to play it to a defender
With Gayle up front ball would keep coming back at us in those situations
Anybody who can say this about himself (after his Villa debut) is alright by me.Curtis Davies on Twitter
I hear palace are using gayle to bring price down for Austin.

I can't help thinking if we can get Chery and Luongo for less than £4m the pair plus Gladwin thrown in, the value is out there.I hope it's someone that we've never heard of. It would prove that we've got our eyes and ears out at the grounds trying to unearth raw gems of talent and not being lazy and overpaying for mediocre players. They are out there, Chery being a recent example.
I do realise that we still need experience though. Especially if the famous three or four all leave.

He hasn't said anything blisteringly self aware and self deprecating, so he can **** right off.James Collins from West Ham is being bandied about as well as Curtis Davies.
Defoe used to play up front alone plenty. Walcott has done. Robbie Keane did and still does albeit in an inferior league. Wayne Rooney is the same height as Gayle. Okazaki, at Leicester, is slightly smaller.
Austin isn't exactly a target man anyway. It's really not necessary for your lone striker to be 6'0"+. It helps sometimes, but the pace of someone like Gayle compared to Austin could make up for it.
All irrelevant anyway because we aren't buying Gayle.
So we shouldn't sign him because of those odd occasions?

Brilliant, let's have them both. Team meetings will be like Communist Party self criticism sessions from the times of Mao. As long as Mackie ends up in the 'airplane position' for a bit it will be good for the collective soul.At last I get to be the contrarian with the master of contary himself ...
