Don't think its realistic to expect that we wont need to hoof the ball clear a few times a game at least. Not necessarily because we're playing bad football but because its a necessary thing for a defender to do or because its not possible for the keeper to play it to a defender

With Gayle up front ball would keep coming back at us in those situations

Anybody who can say this about himself (after his Villa debut) is alright by me.

I hope it's someone that we've never heard of. It would prove that we've got our eyes and ears out at the grounds trying to unearth raw gems of talent and not being lazy and overpaying for mediocre players. They are out there, Chery being a recent example.
I do realise that we still need experience though. Especially if the famous three or four all leave.

I can't help thinking if we can get Chery and Luongo for less than £4m the pair plus Gladwin thrown in, the value is out there.

It is indeed. I think Les and Chris are looking to go back to the traditional Rangers way of doing things. Buy relatively cheap unknowns and sell them off for big profit while still playing good football at a decent level. Sinton, Sinclair, Parker, Parkes and Sir Les himself are just a few examples of this. Obviously football has changed since then so the club can't be totally dominated by a budget airline mentality. Something along the lines of what Southampton are doing would be a good marker to aim for. In the meantime we have to lay down some hard ground rules so that the football world realise that we're no longer the go-to mugs anymore.

James Collins from West Ham is being bandied about as well as Curtis Davies.

Austin isn't exactly a target man anyway. It's really not necessary for your lone striker to be 6'0"+. It helps sometimes, but the pace of someone like Gayle compared to Austin could make up for it.

It is likely we wont buy Gayle, in part because he wouldn't fit the system.

Rooney is a far more physical player...Okazaki is playing up front alongside Vardy... Walcott has done, every now and then but a very small percentage of games he's played for Arsenal. Had Arsenal gone into a season with Walcott as their first choice lone striker then I would maybe understand that but I don't see him playing a game every now and then there the same as us signing a player for a huge chunk of our budget then using him in a role that wouldn't suit his style of play.

Similar to Walcott with Defoe and Keane.

No not just because of that. Much more reasons. That was just a couple of examples. A big part of our game will rely the three in behing (so on Sat, Phillips, Luongo and Chery) getting beyond the striker. A main focus is the striker is good playing with their back to goal.

We will often rely on flick on's wonby the striker. As Austin did mid-week putting Chery through on goal.

It will also matter when the striker needs to lay it off for one of those three in behind as Austin did for Chery's first. Also when you only have one player up front their is added importance on that player being very good in the air. Not just for flick on's and holding it up but for attacking headers like Austin's goal against Wolves.

Gayle to me isn't a lone front man.

I think? I can pronounce this players name. I will say being dyslexic has it's funny moments, trying to pronounce some of the players names these days at work while chatting all things football often gives my work colleges a laugh:emoticon-0148-yes:<laugh>
