Anyway munky, what I meant was that this appointment is the best thing you could have done, experienced plus if they do want to get rid of adams he could step in almost seamlessly.

Appointing adams wasn't and never will be a sensible decision by defination, it was a risk, it might pay off, it might not, but it will always be a risk. Player recruitment is a different ball game altogether.

What I meant by sensible, Is from an outsider it seemed clear that your manager/coaching staff seemed very naive, the board has seen this and have brought in probably the most experienced person they could have done, which should elimiate clueless cock-ups like at forest. <ok>

    you know i am.

but if phelan is viewed as his replacement, i'm not keen on that idea either. frying pan and fire spring to mind. but as a coach i think phelan is the experienced right hand man that might help assist adams so that he learns quickly (something he simply isn't doing at present). lets get this straight - i desperately want adams to get this right because none of us want city languishing in this division. if he can show that he has what it takes then brilliant - i can't think of anything better. i've seen absolutely nothing to suggest he knows what he is doing so far and the rumblings of discontent are not confined to myself.

    I know I was teasing!

I agree on Phelan - I'm not convinced he'd be a great manager, but I do think he is just the sort of sidekick Adams needs and, if it works out, could be a great combo

Interesting that Neil says; "and I decided Mike was the outstanding choice." If Neil was instrumental in ousting Robson and then getting Phelan then I may have underestimated him. Though it could be a risky strategy for his own Job retention as Supers suggests! I'm still confused, can coaching a championship side really have been the best offer he's had since Fergie stepped down?

    Bah!

Yes, I have to agree and let's hope we see a VAST improvement in passion from the team - probably too late to make much of a difference for the visit of the Seagulls, but definitely looking for a change when we play Reading!!!!

Couldn't have said it better myself!! <applause>

Pretty sure I read an interview in the summer saying he wanted a crack at being the big dog next. Presumably such an offer hasn't been forthcoming, but no 2 here, with a decent chance of being our next manager... Not hard to see why he's taken it.

Good appointment though. Not keen on him as a future manager, but exactly what we need right now.

Really happy with this appointment. I've no doubt that the team will soon get its mojo back. I reckon he'll be good for the academy too and might act as a magnet for promising new players.

I would take Phelan over Joe Royal in a heart beat, so much experience at the highest level when Man U were top 4 on the planet .
Great addition and he looks like a ballbreaker.

Having worked with one of the premier league's most successful managers (Sir Alex Ferguson) and coached some of the biggest names names in the premier league including Rooney, Giggs, Ferdindand & Wellbeck and played with the likes of Giggs, Bryan Robson, Canrtona, Steve Bruce this is an excellent appointment for the club, hope he can bring what he learnt at Man U and transfer it to our players.

You also might be interested in reading this link I found on the web, it's Phelan speaking about his last 5 years at Man U under Fergie and his thoughts for the future before he became City's new coach. The article was printed last year

All seems a rum old set up to me but hey ho!

The Manager has far less experience of top flight coaching than the No2 who's coming in! <laugh>

There will be tears before bedtime! <ok>

I don't think there are many in the game with as much experience of top flight European elite football Warky, shows we can attract the best if that's what you were implying?

If Phelan is as good as you say why hasn't he got another job in the Premier League since his sacking?

That's the thing though, has he got a good chance of becoming manager here? If Adams fails the job becomes open, but for Adams to fail his coaching team will also have failed. I know Phelan will then have had time with the squad and know them so could step up. But he will still look like a gamble as he still won't have managed a club, and he won't have sorted out our existing problems. If we improve with him on board, will the board oust Adams after a successful season? It might help him get another job else where but here? I'm not so sure.

    Bah!

but that was the whole point of this setup. to bring continuity. the (ideal) idea was that holt (or robson) would eventually take over from adams.

phelan is an absolute shoe in to be our next manager. i really don't think he'd have come here otherwise.

to take the point that nobody has come in for him in the past 16 months or so - i think that's a fair question. why hasn't anyone come in for him? it does make me nervous. he is respected as a coach so we have no worries in that respect and i think (at least i hope!) we'll see an immediate reaction from our squad in the coming weeks but he was very assertive that he was looking to go into management when fergie retired - he bragged about 'running the team for the last five years' - something i doubt fergie took too kindly too. he has an arrogance about him which makes me think he might do well as a number 1 but i'm sure he must have put his name forward for a number of jobs and failed to get any of them. something doesn't quite add up.
