I'm not even remotely defending him, because he was utterly clueless, but then again, so was Shearer. You'd think he'd bother to read up on a team he's supposed to have some emotional tie-up with. Steve Claridge put them both to shame. In fact, I beginning to believe that Claridge is one of the few pundits worth listening to. Lawrenson would be better if he could be enthusiastic past the Top 4, + Liverpool, sides of the PL. Lee Dixon is actually very good.

BTW, anyone who watches ITV coverage of football needs their head seen to. Adverts are the first turn-off, before we even get near the poor quality of presentation.
 
Harry is pretty poor, but interesting to have him on due to the connection between him and the England job - at least it's current. He doesn't even bother remembering any foreign/non-Premiership players' names, just calls them "the lad". Noticed Strachan did the same the other night, was talking through a passage of play for the Spain-Italy game, focusing on Iniesta, and said about one of the Spanish players that the ball came to: "I don't know who that is". Spanish team isn't that tough to remember all eleven!

I don't mind Strachan, though, as ITV pundits go. BBC's pundits are all getting a bit worn out. Martin O'Neill was good when he was on during the World Cup. Jay-Jay Okacha was the worst I've ever seen, on ITV during 2006 World Cup. Would like to see Chris Waddle given more facetime on BBC. Problem is, he speaks his mind too freely to be given free reign.

Claridge is pretty good, he's fair and balanced in his analysis and I think he really gets stick from some section of the Saints support based purely on his ex-Skate credentials.

As for ITV, I would agree but, as Pass the football has said, we don't have a choice when it comes to the football, apart from the final. The ad breaks annoy me, too, and the mute button on my remote is going to get worn out pretty soon. I don't watch commercial channels any more than I have to but I have the remote close by when I do, in order to save myself from mind-numbingly crass 'lifestyle choice promotions' and particularly those bloody Go Compare ads. <grr>
 
Gary Neville, Claridge, Lee Dixon, Waddle and Graeme Murty are all people worth listening to. As ex-players they analyse the game well, and offer insight in what people have done wrong, what they should be doing and expand knowledge. Linekar is a good host for a show as well. The problem is BBC/ITV misunderstand what the viewing public want. We WANT to be taught things about the game which actually interest us.
What is the point in sitting pointing out the obvious? There is no need, all they do is repeat themselves.

For example: "England were well-drilled and hard to beat"

Pre-game, they don't preview key players, managers or tactics or anything because they simply don't know. If anyone saw emiliano from milano on the ITV coverage of the Italy game the other day, it was incredible. A fan sat at a table behind them offered more insight and a better preview of the game than any of the ITV pundits.
They don't even know which formations teams will play or who has done well in qualifying! They just point out the obvious. Any of us on here would be better and more worth listening than lawrenson/hansen/shearer/viera etc. It genuinely makes me angry that they get so much money for doing such lazy shoddy work

Ps. Viera is the worst pundit I have ever seen, he doesn't even know the french team or man city players(!!!)let alone anyone else.
 
Yes, ol' Gary Lineker doesn't get much of a mention, probably because he's grown into being extremely good at what he does. I think he'd actually be an excellent pundit, if he decided to take a break from being a presenter, for a while. Outside of presenting, his views on how footballers/sportspeople behave and present themselves are quite intelligent and forthright. He doesn't hold back.

Yup, he is great on Twitter. He also knows enough people in the game to make jokes about them all and them not take it offensively, and can take stick when he gets it. I think he is really good, and absolutely wasted on the BBC by talking to a bunch of morons
 
I dislike Robbie Savage, he does speak his mind though. I get bored of the MOTD pundits just saying the same things about the same teams week in week out.
 
Ian Wright has to be the worst pundit ever. I remember Euro 2004 when England lost to Portugal, Lineker asked him for his post match reaction his reply was 'I don't want to talk about it'. However I also dislike Andy Townsend and Jim Beglin because I think they are both completely one eyed and were second rate players and think Alan Green is a biased douche (although he does occasionally provide a laugh).
 
Shearer needs to become a manager as soon as possible. At the moment he seems to be sporting an inane pitchside grin for some reason. I quite like Lawrenson's slightly camp sarcastic utterances from time to time, they can be amusing. Robbie savage, please go away.

Bring back Claridge!
 
Hanson really is a poor pundit, I get the feeling he says something without fully thinking it through, and then his stubborness kicks in and refuses to conceed when the likes of Dixon, Keown and Gary correct him.
 
Strachan and Martinez running down France. Apparently France aren't very good and full of individuals. They are unbeaten in 22 games ffs. They are capable of winning this tournament as much as anyone..
