You cannot say democracy only works if the guy in charge is someone who agrees with my view of democracy. For you to say it's the only way to get rid of him is completely untrue. While he was Prime Minister, their parliament agreed to REDUCE the term of any government to 4 years from 5 years. As President this was also REDUCED to a maximum of 2 terms. His party won the country's election last year by an absolute landslide despite it being for proportional representation.

Turkey has had a military coup virtually every decade since 1960 and it's stunted the democratic process every time. Democracy is a process. It goes through many tough challenges in any nation. To give up on it so easily and resort to military dictatorship undermines the ideology of democracy. I may disagree with him, but he is a democratically elected leader. The idea of ANY military coup to preserve democracy is a complete contradiction in terms.

And each time the military has stepped in it has been to defend the secular state of Turkey from radical extremism. The guy in charge now is moving the country towards an Islamic state, yes it is with the support of the people and democratic. But is it good for the wider world?

Same here, and I agree. Can never forgive Erdogan for trying to kick-off WW3 shooting down the Russian jet.

Went to Turkey again in May...great place with great people. If their tourist industry wasn't ****ed before it definitely is now...such a shame.

So some threads get locked and others don't. Must be the ones that don't fit in with the mods view of things.
Apparently you can be critical of anyone but Muslims.

What plans do the EU have for Cyprus. Are they trying to re-unite with the Turkish north? I guess we take Akrotiri with us when we brexit.

This is just your opinion. Was it good for the wider world that Bush was elected President of the U.S.? Should they have had a military coup there? We have absolutely no right to decide on what's best for a country simply because we don't like the guy in charge. At the end of the day, he IS a democratically elected person. ALL previous military coups have stunted democracy. IF we allow Turkey to go through the difficulties it needs to, to learn from its past mistakes naturally, any long term democratic institution in the country will be stronger for it. We have to stop allowing fear to inform our attitude to other countries AND applying double standards towards countries's right to democracy simply because we don't like their politics.

He has a maximum of 2 terms and EVERYTHING he has done so far he has a democratic mandate to do. If he overstays his welcome after the 2 terms then fair enough, the country will need to do what it needs to, but it is their country and it should be their people's decision everytime. Not an unelected military coup supported by some U.S. backed General sitting in America.

But they are Muslims, Chazz. I said something a lot less unpleasant the other day about someone who had just massacred people and the thread was locked. Double standards by the mods.

But it wasn't a Muslim who killed those people in Nice, he ate pork and drank in bars.
Just like he wasn't a Muslim in Orlando, who killed all those gays, he used to attend that club himself.
But the killer of Jo Cox was a right wing terrorist of course.
