According to latest radio news something like 3000 armed forces personnel have been rounded up and detained.......

There will be reprisals by Erdogan for sure.......

And 2,800 judges sacked.

The bloke he is blaming is in exile in the US. His crime is to be a more moderate Muslim than Erdogan.

Seems like the west is lining up behind Erdogan, currently pondering bringing back the death penalty for the plotters, as a shining example of democracy. Clearly I'm missing something here.

I think they're beginning to realise that however unpalatable Erdogan may be, the alternative, and possible instability it would result in, could be far worse. Perhaps with the lessons of the removal of Saddam and Gaddafi and subsequent power vacuums created the penny has finally dropped, "Be careful what you wish for"...

Were it not for radical Islam I'd say that Turkey is a very different place to Libya or Iraq, or Egypt, it has a long, but on and off, history of democracy, is properly secularist and the military has been respected and independent for a long time, it's previous crops were popular. But everything is so ****ed up now who knows, except that nothing is likely to get better.

Erdogan is a man you don't fail to remove from power, now he has another excuse to remove or deal with more of his opponents.

He will be properly paranoid now. He may still bring a real combined services coup to a head if he goes to far. Which I expect he will.

It has been suggested that Erdogan may have been behind the coup anyway...as a way to establish himself as the life-long president...he is effectively removing more and more of his critics.

The West think he is better than the alternative, which they fear could be radical Islamics and so do nothing so as to protect their bridge between Europe and the Islamic world beyond

If he brings back the death penalty, he can kiss goodbye to his already slim hopes of joining the EU. The EU wouldn't allow a member state with such a policy.

If Erdogan starts executing soldiers out of hand, those many in the military that did not join the coup might think about starting another one in support of their imprisoned compatriots. Sometimes, Islam has a hard job understanding moderation.

Just seems the world has gone crazy. Maybe it has always been that way and I have been too wrapped up not noticing.
Turkey, the USA, France, where next?
Mother Nature has been providing crazy weather systems so maybe she is also getting fed up with what's going on.
And tomorrow, I go back to my school for kids with severe challenging behaviours and severe learning disabilities. Kids who cannot communicate as we do - or as others could. And all they need is someone to help give them a decent quality of life

8000 police officers suspended, in addition to the 2750 judges sacked and to the 6000 soldiers and other arrested. Amazing that such a well supported coup attempt firstly failed and secondly wasn't leaked before it happened. Hmmm, I wonder......

Having lived there and having a Turkish son in law I will add my tuppence for what it is worth.
Erdogan is a very dangerous man, when I first moved to Turkey it was a very secular state, Females who wore the hijab ( headscarf ) where not allowed to go to university, could not hold high ranking jobs or be TV presenters, but as Erdogan has gained power he has changed the Turkish constitution and allowed the country to become more Islamic and has strengthened his grip on power.It is the opinion of several of my Turkish friends that his ultimate aim is to re- create the sultanate or caliphate that was Turkey before Mustafa Kemal Ataturk came to power and created the Turkish Republic in effect he wants to bring back the old Ottoman Empire.
When Ataturk created the Republic he changed the alphabet to the European from the Arabic and told the people to look to the west not the east for progress, he in effect turned his back to Islam as such and turned turkey into a westernised Nation and gave the ultimate power to the armed forces who have staged several Coups in fact when it looked like the country was again turning east the last I believe in 1980.Over the last decade Erdogan has had many purges of high ranking armed forces personnel and high ranking figures of authority who it would appear stood in his way and has slowly strangled the power of said people thus allowing him to pursue his objectives.
If you look at recent European history this is pretty much the same as Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin did, in Germany in the 30's it was the night of the long knives and the burning of books ( education ) and in Russia it was the purge of most of the military generals and high ranking soldiers whom Stalin felt threatened by. Erdogan is pretty much doing the same with the closure and seizure of more and more of the free press,the detention without trial of many thousands of journalists and his said purges of all high ranking officials who he feels threatened by.
In effect If Hitler and Stalin had a love child the person would be ERDOGAN, THE MAN HAS NO FEAR OF WHO HE UPSETS IN HIS QUEST TO BE THE EMIR OR SULTAN AND LEADER OF THE NEW OTTOMAN EMPIRE OR ISLAMIC CALIPHATE, BE AFRAID PEOPLE BE VERY AFRAID BECAUSE IF HE GETS AWAY WITH THIS THERE WILL BE NO STOPPING HIM AND HIS MAD INTENTIONS FOR THE WORLDS FUTURE.

Apparently 14 ships of the Turkish navy have refused to return to port and are wandering around the Aegean and the Black Sea. One has the Top admiral of the navy on board, it's not clear whether willingly or not.

Still, good to see democracy behind defended with such zeal.

At least 45,000 people have been rounded up, sacked or suspended from their jobs by Turkey's government in the wake of last week's failed coup.

The purge of those deemed less than loyal to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan widened on Tuesday to include teachers, university deans and the media.

The government says they are allied to US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, who denies claims he directed the uprising.

PM Binali Yildirim said the preacher led a "terrorist organisation".

"We will dig them up by their roots," he told parliament.

15,200 teachers and other education staff had been sacked

• 1,577 university deans were ordered to resign

• 8,777 interior ministry workers were dismissed

• 1,500 staff in the finance ministry had been fired

• 257 people working in the prime minister's office were sacked
