Can you name the Classic winner? Come on, Ron. You'll get this one!

You need my first when dirt's around,
My second's for sale - hand in the air,
The hamlet becomes..... more feet on the ground,
His rider smiles- it gave him a pair.

I could never get Riddle-me-ree's puzzles back in the day. Got no chance with yours :)

I don't suppose it is Grinnling Gibbons? :D

Sorry Tam. Struggling as usual. Tried to make Spectacular Bid fit but no chance.

Is it an American classic winner?

OMG. I've tried working with "Bid" and then Charlie Smirke. Not getting anywhere. Will keep trying :emoticon-0107-sweat

I'd already looked up Auction House but didn't get anywhere (except it didn't win a classic)

Not completely worked it out but give me 5 minutes. I think it may be Camelot

Did it give Joseph a pair of classics? There is a relationship between Hamlet and Camelot but can't figure out for the riddle. Lot No at auction. Line 1 camel????????????

Forget the last line. It just completes the riddle- and the jockey isn't Joseph. What do you buy at an auction? You buy a " "
The only things I have bought at auction are 2 horses and, when I was a kid, some shallots (for 2 shillings). You buy cars, houses, bargains, lots, paintings, memorabilia, furniture, more or less anything I suppose (based on TV series).

I haven't a clue Tam. Well, you have given me a clue; but I still have no idea. Surely someone will get it - rainer, Bustino, where are you?

PS. Unless it's Definite Article

Not sure if this is how you do them but I'll have a practice - Well known race horse

My first is so tasty
When split can be found in Brazil
To finish off may be over the top
Couldn't lose
