Well that went well! Our money was done before the start as RP reported Hills saying he's a bit gawky and will learn a lot today. However paddock commentators were saying he was the best looking colt in the field and what is more the best Canford Cliffs they'd seen. Money loaned
I think so, especially with that info. I always look at 2yos that were placed 5th or 6th on début, not beaten too far, decent time, not given a hard race and/or with an encouraging comment and, of course, well bred. That's the general rule although they don't have to be 5th or 6th if they finish close enough. I then look to see how the others in the race run subsequently. Sometimes come up with a decent priced winner.
My reason was Sleat, the 4th dam. She was one of the few decent horses by Santa Claus (who as a kid I liked!), the other one was probably Colum, but Santa Claus was generally a poor sire. Sleat was as tough as nails and also happened to be a half-sister to the Leger winner Athens Wood. She won a few races including the Sun Chariot. Surprised to see her so that was why I picked her out. I'd say that was a good maiden. The winner had previously been 4th to Recorder who looks useful too now. Haggas must have thought his was up against it if he had the measure of his two colts.
