nah, its a NATO war mate, just like Yemen, which is why there is little about the Saudis incinerating buses full of kids like they did last week killing 29 kids on one bus. It's US and UK made weapons they are using to do that killing, so BBC n co.. meh.

Remember BAE systems have a man on the BBC trust too, Roger Carr. BAE sell **** to the Saudis.

    But Syria is sexy.

    Yemen is not.

Nobody in Europe gives a **** about Yemen.

And truthfully imo nobody gives a **** about Syria bar the refugee crisis in Europe.

The reality in Syria is that the Russians have been allowed the field to tidy it up just enough

It's more about influence in the area now than anything I think.

You can hear the little Republican prayers ... "just get Kavannagh through before the orange bastard disintegrates completely"

They know they are ****ed in the next few elections but if they get him confirmed that's decades of a Judiciary siding with them on every plum issue.

I don't know that they are.

There seems to my mind to be a more liberal coast line east and west where its democrat majorities usually and bit lumps of middle and south thats perma-red.

What we are talking about is swing states to flip a house here one way or the other.

It seems to me they get to pick shades or red or blue but not between in many places.

Te supreme court appointments are what they are. they are not the be all and end all. They still have to decide using the actual law.

The fact that all the issues that divide conservatives and liberal since the origins of the US have swung back and forward due to the SC interpretation of the constitutions application on laws or Govt actions suggests you drastically underplay the SCs importance....

If it's loaded in your favour it is more likely to adopt a social view like yours for decades rather than susceptible to the whims of the electorate every 2 to 4 years. Why else do you think the GOP went to so much effort to thwart Obama filling a seat and abandoning literally all of the supposed pillars of the republican ideology in the last 2 years to get a first and now second pick?

You seem to think the people in court positions are somehow apolitical. Nice in theory and yes, judges have been seen to go against their politics pre post but it's rare. And in the modern era those centrist judge picks have become rarer as congress has become more polarised.

Oh and the SC and lower courts (Trump has filled more court positions in the last 2 years than 4 presidents before him) have the say on electoral boundaries, registration etc which keeps those "Red" states red due to the imbalance population to vote wise in the rural areas.

Steady and swing states is terminology that is more accurate in regards presidential elections.

Senate and even more so House elections are much more volatile. Traditionally people voted in the other party to the president as a balance now it's a method to stop the incumbent from doing anything at all.

The idea that mid western states are red because of a white hegemony is a bit of a myth.... it's more that non whites have been deliberately disenfranchised in these areas for decades.

The current make the Hispanics non American is just the latest example of that... year on year change in demographic in southern states yet if you can make those people non Americans they can't vote.

It's just a continuance of policies directed against blacks for the last 100 years.

GOP make up over next ten years will be interesting.

To get their tax breaks, judge picks and attempt to destroy obamacare has produced Trump .they can't control him and due to the journey from Tea Party to trump means that 33% of their base is the nutters that have seen grass roots activism rather than send your cheque and trust your old white Dude that's been there for years actually works.

Do they continue to pander more and more to this 33%? Its angry, reactive and volatile. It's the white mob. Or do they try and drag it back to center right?

Same thing is happening in Dems ... The party elite have failed for years to motivate their target electorate because they didn't really give a **** about them... they abandoned the party's pics. It got worse when Obama basically ignored the party machine and used his own grass roots activists, had the money come to him rather than through the party.

Now you are seeing progressive candidates doing the same...making the Dem party machine possibly irrelevant.

It's a rough transition but it might actually be a good thing regarding to individual activism ...at leastsince the Vietnam war and Equal rights movement....

    But it's polarised and violent.

Same goes for England really... momentum and UKIP were grass roots activism scaring the hell out of Labour and Conservative parties but uncontrolled activism can very easily lead to angry job situations...

    Cyclical I suppose.

I dunno but at this point

    a) I can't see a third party in usa. each state is a.country in its own right almost, some more than others and it would just mean even less influence.

    b) while cyclical is seems to be extreme capitalism with a hint of liberalism or complete conservatism on social.affairs. there's no left wing at all. just shades of the free market.

    c) the gop is the bed of far right. like UKIP is in effect the far right of.tories just dressed up.and it vanished with brexit forcing the middle ground to go with them.

the more extreme the voice the more the middle ground go along to survive.

there's no strong voice in the middle.

until it all goes tits up.

Ooooh .... Has Pence began to make his move?

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/05/opinion/trump-white-house-anonymous-resistance.html
Whoever it is this is utter cowardice and despite my view of Trump undemocratic... Same as the people in the Woodword piece. Either you think Trump is unfit for office and come out in a proper manner article 25, resign etc or you carry out the will of the President as part of his administration. This is all very coup light.

Coopting the language of the popular activism of opposition to Trump doesn't absolve these people of being voluntarily part of this admin. They aren't "the good nazi"

    It really is fascinating though.
