On the face of it, the name isn't very exciting compared to some of the exotic overseas ones banded about. It's one that is growing on me especially if Vardy stays as he's one of those who has consistently scored and has stepped up a level well. If it's for the right amount, bring him in!
A couple of years ago he was no different to Rhodes, McCormack, McGoldrick and dare I say it Wood and Nugent. How times have changed.
He'd be a good signing, but sceptical about the price quoted. That said, he's had roughly as good a season as Vardy (not scored as many but been pivotal to Watford's chances, and is also a few years younger) and we think £20 million is too low for him. If we're going to be signing decent Premier League players that's how much we're going to have pay, unfortunately.
Tell Morgan, Huth and Wasyl to explain how things are around here and he could potentially do a really good job. Would be a replacement for Vardy though which isn't such good news.
The point is he did not want to come to us 2 years ago, and now all of a sudden he does! wonder why he has had a change of heart! his loss could have had a Gold medal
How do you know he didn't want to come to us then - Watford didn't accept a bid. That he didn't have a mardy fit and stage a strike to join us is a good thing as we want professionals.
Reports that Watford have actually made a bid, which obviously means they are trying to find a replacement for Leicester bound Deeney ...
The more I think about this the more exited it gets me. Remember when we tried to sign him for £8m and we all thought it was a dreadful bid? (Myself included) Just shows how persistent we are with targets who we think are right and how good our scouting team is to spot them early! Same with being linked with the likes of slimani, mendy, Okasaki and I'm sure some others
I know we aren't paupers, but paying over £20 million for Deeney does seem steep. I suppose you have to regard footballers like any other asset ... if he fits in and we stay in the top 6 then he will have been worth it, and if it doesn't work out and we decide to get rid then his sell-on fee will not have fallen (as he will still have age on his side) and we should recoup our outlay.
Just can't see how 2 years younger makes him worth more than Vardy! Deeney should have been more thoughtful, and put a buy out clause when he signed his new contract like Vardy did.
