Didn't Eric Gates used to win an absolute ridiculous amount of penalties as well. I'm sure I've heard and seen that somewhere Back on to Whymark, he used to coach me was I was a youngster at a local level (I lived near Diss) and I'm sure he was a coach at either Norwich or Ipswich when I played there at Under 13 & Under 14s. I remember my Dad telling me all about him and that great team and led me to watching 'the boys of 81' religiously on VHS and realising that Ipswich Town were once an unbelievably great team
My first ever match was against Chelsea in about 1982 and I had to stand on a milk crate to see over the wall. I lived so close to the ground that from as young as I can remember I heard a massive cheer every time Town scored. So although I was too young to really see any trophies, Ipswich were still a massive club when I was little. By the time I started going every week we were winning the Second Division and joining the Premier League. So really when you think about it, you would have to now be 60 years old to really remember a time when Ipswich were not among the elite. That's why it's crippling for kids in the town now who have never seen what a great club Ipswich Town can be.
