At the end of the day, 5 signings before August has even begun is decent business by anybody's standards, as the vast majority of transfers go through in August. It's just at least another 3 first team players are clearly needed.

Murphy, Lejeune and Atsu are all good signings who will all be in the first team (first team or bench in Atsu's case), Manquillo is nothing more than a squad player, and **** knows about Merino, could turn out to be a genius buy, or just another Lazaar/Ferreya/Doumbia type waste of space.

No, I don't think we'll get a wow signing, but I think we'll get a decent striker, another central midfielder and winger....well, we're ****ed if we don't.

This could be timely - see if we genuinely are interested

Real Betis have made a £6.25million offer for Newcastle United and Swansea City target Ryad Boudebouz. The 27-year-old was in fine form for Montpellier last season and ended the campaign with 11 Ligue goals.

Now, the Algerian is looking for a fresh challenge and he has attracted plenty of interest from clubs in England.

mind you - it is from Talkshite - so who knows....

As it stands we're trying to stand our moral ground. We seem to be saying "these prices are insane, we refuse to pay them" but it's like being starved, having a fiver in your pocket and refusing to pay £4.99 for an egg sandwich. Sure, the price is high, but you need the ****ing sandwich so just buy it.

What Charnley/Barnes/Ashley (and Rafa??) have failed to grasp is we don't have the luxury or choice. We're four weeks away from heading into a PL season with Missrovic, Gayle and Perez as our strikers, De Jong as our main No. 10 and both Jack Colback, Jesus Gamez and Mo Diame dangerously close to first XI players. Anybody who claims to be happy with that - including Benitez - is a mackem.

Sure, a lot might happen and I hope it does. But does it seem hugely likely given the Summer so far? We've bought a utility full back as cover for Dummett/Yedlin (hardly good enough to begin with!), a winger to offer cover for Ritchie, a midfielder as cover for Hayden and one centre back likely to be first choice. Grand total is one first team player, with one season's top flight experience. Nobody can possibly count the signing of Atsu as a new player.
Who should we have signed that Brighton signed? Or Burnley? (Taylor got less PL experience than dummett) Huddersfield? (Palmer was an expected loan) Southampton? Stoke (well aside from zouma-loan) Swansea (aside from Abraham what they got?) Spurs? West Brom? And if you want us to sign aload of over-priced crap because of PL experience than we'd be doing a west ham

Think its worth looking at it against other teams rather than setting high standards of our own. Overall our transfers arent that bad so far. Give it time mate, reality is half these teams were ****ter than us last year, and if you want us down with the biggest wage bill in history than yes, you will be disappointed. You have to sell before you buy with a squad our size. That isn't tightfisted at all, because the opposite is just idiocy

Last season Premier League clubs were worse than us? You give us far too much credit mate.

Well Sunderland obvs.
But seriously, Hull took it to the wire in the end and they had a better squad? All twelve of them? Swansea are losing Sigurdsson, Burnley, Watford's buys are risky (Cleverly !?), Stoke looked gash, West Brom lost all way to the end of the season after confirming safety, ye course there were worse teams.
Think you're giving them too little credit mate, the other two teams we came up with, we finished above them and, aside the **** up at hudds at the start, bested them one to one.
I don't expect anything but a relegation fight, but there's enough teams around us that can be on par, luckily their transfer windows are similar to ours so far

The real worry for me is scoring enough goals. We need that bit of quality up front and in attacking midfield. There are other positions which we could try and improve if possible but I'd go with what we've got plus a new (quality) #9 and #10 and be confident of staying up. The wingers are looking decent - Ritchie is good, and I think Murphy will actually do quite well for us. CM is decent enough against most of the teams in the bottom half of the league. The defence is ok - some weaknesses and frailties but, again, will perform in enough games to get us the points we need. Keepers - OK, we don't have a stand out keeper but they are probably no worse than what a lot of teams have.

We know Rafa will try and get these players but it's just what's available to us and what we can afford. We just have to hope the quality players are out there.

See posts 148 and 151 above. The poster is a genius and clearly knows what he's talking about.

I absolutely agree with this. We are actually compartivley active it seems to me. Everyone outside of man city, Chelsea, man u and everton are basically like a rabbit in the headlights with these mental transfer prices being quoted. We are at least thinking on our feet trying to find decent value.

We really could do with at a minimum a CF before the new season though. Perez would be ideal so if arsenal are quoting 14m ish we should just find it. Presuming he can be persuaded.
