If he comes to us , he will be going to Liverpool . Just a slightly different route , and longer journey .
Madders, Josh Murphy, Watkins and now Ben Godfrey. Sales of approx. £40m so is this enough to please the money men or should we expect more silver to be sold?
Telegraph now reporting a £25m bid accepted from Leicester for Maddison, medical in the next few days.
Well two of those haven't happened yet, and Godfrey seems very unlikely at the rumoured £3m. Realistically, Maddison pays our debts (for this summer). Then probably half the Murphy money, and anything else we make in sales, can be used for the squad. In terms of "is this it?", personally I still expect Klose and/or Pinto to leave.
Reading between the lines it seems to be £22m + £3m in add-ons or £24m + £1m in the later reports. Some of that will go back to Coventry (as it should) and hopefully we'll have a healthy sell-on fee windfall eventually. That, plus Murphy and Watkins should provide some financial security. Here's Gary Gower's take on it, plus the less convincing rumours about Godfrey: http://norwichcity.myfootballwriter...ut-godfrey-and-the-latest-suitor-for-madderz/
Yes, it certainly got a response. I'm still not convinced that Godfrey is anything more than blog rumours to fill pages in a slow window. He is everything SW says he wants - young, hungry, determined and with PL potential in the future. Selling him now would fly in the face of that. It'd be like selling Madders after his Aberdeen loan.
Yet every player we have has a price. Couple that with our inabiltiy to pay in the same league as half of the championship or any of the PL and I don't think we can discount the sale of any player. I doubt we would want to sell, but if Godfrey makes it clear he has a better offer and wants to go, would we risk an unhappy player? Bah!
This is from the Daily Mail: "The fee is understood to be £22m with a further £2m in add-ons, with Norwich also due 10 per cent of any future sale. It represents the record price paid for a Championship player." Such a sale along with the two Murphys would do much to counterbalance the mistakes over recent years.
Unfortunately General, you're absolutely right re wages and footballers have a pretty short career. #timewilltell
I don't see Godfrey going anywhere this season. With the sale of Murphy and the potential sales of Maddison & Oliveria, financially we don't need to sell him this season. Godfrey is on a long contract, so assuming of of course we think he's good enough the play championship football, it makes much more sense to play him this season (hopefully increase his value) and if necessary sell him to balance the books in a year's time. This time next year we should be in a much better position wages wise. I think assuming Maddison & Oliveria go then we should have 8 to 10m to spend this year.
Looks like it's Leicester then - James Maddison: Norwich accept Leicester bid of about £20m. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44518422 Edit - see post https://www.not606.com/forums/norwich-city.48/ #310. I'm sure I said somewhere recently that he'd probably go to Leicester.
I think you did, JMF. SkySports is now reporting the same: http://www.skysports.com/football/n...-after-snubbing-southampton-move-from-norwich
Is that good or bad? It will be partly dependant on what the addons are and whether we will see them. Then also on whether he continues his upward trajectory. £24m + £6m in 2 years if he moves to a top 6 club for £60m and you'd say thats pretty good. £30m from a player who currently hasn't played any PL football and only one Champ season under his belt. On the other hand, if he struggles and never quite adjusts to the PL (I really don't believe that will be the case) Then £22m for a low end PL player is also pretty darned good. It's easy to get carried away with the figures being bandied about for other players and maybe another club might squeek out another 3 or 4 mill. But we will never know as we are the only club owning him in the here and now. I think its an adequate deal, not brilliant by the club, but not a disaster either. Of course it isn't done yet, it will also end up being undisclosed so we'll have to see. What we will judge the club on is how well the available funds from the sale of him, Josh and any others is spent. Crossed fingers time! Bah!
Completely agree. I would go further though and say that in our financial position, this is a very good deal, more than adequate. Of course, it could always be better, but realistically I cannot see any downside for us. It could also be a good deal for Leicester, but they are taking all the risk and giving us c.£22m (plus extra) for it. As you say though, the proof of the quality for us is how we use the fruits. Separately, let's face it, record price for a Championship player is also a great record for the Academy. It's things like that which will help attract further talent and scouts to help.
I'm not sure the academy can take too much credit where Maddison is concerned. Lewis, and the Murphy's certainly, but Madders joined straight to the u23's. It won't do any harm of course but its those guys I mentioned that have come through the ranks that will give the most clout to recruitment. I guess all the rest of the failed youth cup winning side might give a rather gloomier picture. Not one that is unrepresentative of the game, so few youngsters can make it through, especially with all the cheaper foreign imports around Bah!
