Twtd reporting we've made enquiries for Tom Carney. Midfielder is an area of the pitch we need to recruit in, not sure I know enough about Carney to say whether he fits - suggestions in the comments he's yet more competition for the Taylor spot rather than a Mati deputy

Must be something in it, despite not fitting the profile of player we typically sign. He turns 35 in a week or so. Having said that, he’s a very good footballer. He adds a lot of experience and leadership to a squad arguably lacking in those areas. He’s been a Premier League regular for Fulham, including this season.

Feels like he’d be a Travers/Dom Ball type signing, but playing at a much higher level. With an eye on promotion, he’d probably be a player well suited to the Premier League next season. Even if it is only for a year or two at most.

I remember him playing against us about 10 years ago and was outstanding, controlled the game. Still Fulham captain and started the other night against Chelsea, skeptical it'll will go ahead.

But exactly the type of player we need alongside Matusiwa, effectively replacing Morsy in the team as can control a game and probably slightly more defensive than our other options there. Good experience and match fit, sounds good to me. I just not sure it would be worth the financial outlay for a 35 year it'll cost us.

So we've signed Mehmeti from Bristol, based purely on Tuesday's showing completely underwhelming.Hopefully there's more to his game!!

I'm happy with the Mehmeti signing. Yet more attacking reinforcement to help get the goals needed for automatic promotion.

Wouldn't take much notice of his performance on Tuesday, clearly you wouldn't want to be getting injured and risk not getting a transfer to a team that could give you Premier League football next season. In the earlier game of the season he was one of their standout players.

Apparently we're close to signing Dan Neil on loan from Sunderland.

Will be a cracking signing for you. Key part of our promotion team last year and has suffered from the ridiculous strengthening we did in CM in the summer. Personally I think he could have played a part this season had he been given a chance, but the coach thinks otherwise so fair enough.
He's a silky player, great passer of the ball and great vision/awareness. Started as an 8, but morphed into a 6 when we had injuries. Hopefully will do a good job for you guys.

#9 yes. Torn about left back as Greaves has been decent cover for Davis (ignoring Saturday) and Johnson can also play there. If we bring someone else in, what happens in the summer - will we just release Townsend who I think is a decent player. I know he’s getting older but still good enough. Akpon / Szmodics have not worked in the 10, hence the reason for signing Mehmeti who can play the 10 the way we need it played as not sure how long Nunez is out. Really hope we can get a Keiffer Moore lone type signing through the door to increase our fire power

From what I hear Neil is exactly the type of player we need. A deep laying playmaker who can mix it, I think this is Morsy's replacement. We've got Matusiwa who is the person who breaks up play and all our other midfielders would rather be further up the pitch. I think Cajuste and Nunez suit the 10 or in a midfield 3, which I think Taylor would also prefer. We really struggle to have any hold of the midfield with 2 if 1 is attack minded.

I'm hoping these 2 signings might also improve the performance of our strikers. More control in the middle of the park and better linking between the lines. Hopefully like the signings of 3 years ago when the signings improved the performances of those around them.

Most Sunderland fans (and I don't claim to speak for them) appear to be disappointed by this transfer. Most wanted him to get a chance, but understand why he didn't. Not signing a new contract the season we finished 16th probably did for him in the eyes of the powers that be. Going to be keeping an even closer eye on Ipswich games now.

I agree with consensus on Neil that he’s a good signing for us. Although a central midfielder wasn’t massively high up the list of priorities for me - he comes with a strong reputation and will improve the starting eleven. He wasn’t getting in that Sunderland team ahead of Xhaka. A loan move reduces the financial risk and, if he does well here, we can pick him up for free in the summer.

The move also means we can explore ways of moving the likes of Cajuste and Taylor to fill the number 10 role to cover for Nunez’s injury.

I still think we need a centre forward. Hirst has been off it this season and doesn’t look suited to the role we require - now that we’re a team expected to dominate possession and win games frequently. Azon just isn’t clinical enough in front of goal. Akpom possibly could fill the role if he gets more minutes, but again he has struggled to take the chances given to him so far this season.

I wonder if we can expect to see some departures over the next few days? Szmodics is somebody linked with a move away. He’s struggled with injury, despite flashes of quality last season in the Premier League (I still think his injury mid-season contributed towards the massive drop off in results). Is there a need for Ben Johnson in the squad? He’s somebody we could move on for a profit - considering he came as a free transfer.
