At least the talk of that Mbokani bloke seems to have gone quiet, he didn't interest me even in the slightest and would only have ever been a desperation buy in my opinion.

I can see why there would be concerns about Mbokani, but you keep repeating that it is "desperation" which is absolute nonsense.

I don't see anything of a desperation signing about Mbokani in the slightest. It's quite clear he was high up on our hitlist of strikers that we would want right from the very start given when rumours began and that makes sense because he is big, strong quick, has a good finishing record and at 29 is at the top of his game - for the price he was being sold at, he represented very good value and about as safe a bet as any foreign player could be (every player is a gamble). The sticking point was simply that he doesn't qualify for a work permit, so we can't get him. By all accounts he would have signed before the first game of the season if that hadn't been the case.

We move on. Desperation he definitely wasn't. Anyone we might sign now will be desperation and I'm inclined to think that given the performances so far we just stick with what we've got and have another go at Afobe in January.

On Afobe - interesting to read their (Wolves') perspective:

Also check out the link to club valuations on the next page! Norwich supposedly worth £1m more than Villa <laugh>

It would definitely have been a desperation signing in my opinion, I'm pretty certain there's no chance that he'd have been high on our list of targets at the start of the summer.

Had you honestly even heard of him a month ago? I shall bow to your greater knowledge if so as I had certainly not come across him - not even on Football Manager!

I think I had heard of him because he scored twice in the ACN ?semi-final match, although I must confess that might be memory playing with me with the benefit of hindsight. Didn't know of him at club level. I don't see why whether you've heard of him or not has any bearing on whether he'll be any good? You were the one who said as much to me re Brady. I hadn't heard of RvW, he turned out rubbish, I hadn't heard of Tettey, he turned out pretty great.

By all accounts the deal was tied up early on in the summer - don't forget the rumour first arose in late June, it was one of the earliest rumours to come through. We then heard there was an issue with previous money owed by his current club, then the issue of the work permit came up. I can't claim to have inside info on the club, but I sincerely doubt given his pedigree, form and the rumoured price of £5.5m that he wasn't very high up our list of options and judging from the news top. How that equals "desperation" I don't know, unless we're going to play Carrabuh word games.

EDIT: interestingly a forum search of the earliest mention of Mbokani is that we were linked with him way back in January 2013 when he was still at Anderlecht - we might have done our scouting then! I certainly do not remember that! DH - do you remember posting this? ;)

I hadn't heard of AN prior to his signing by McNally.....

I don't have a problem with them picking up foreign players that we haven't heard of as long as the scouts have done their homework

Apparently Newcastle have also submitted a bid. If we're going to get Afobe this late in the day, I suspect we're going to have to send them someone the other way (on loan) as they'll be completely screwed otherwise. The only player I can think of that might go is Lafferty. Would they take him? We could do with him playing tonight, scoring a hattrick... etc

Fair enough, I must have missed some of that as I thought we only began our rumoured interest in him a couple of weeks or so ago, and didn't realise we were linked with him in June.

I'm still not interested in him personally, though I would be happy for him to prove me wrong of course.

Moot point - we can't have him due to the work permit issue several weeks ago. He is class from the limited amount I've seen and he would be perfect for this season given his strength and pace (he'd basically be an exact upgrade to Jerome because he seems to be a better finisher), but nothing can be done unfortunately. And of course, like any foreign signing, he could easily have been a spectacular failure despite class.

I quite like the ironic hashtag used by the Wolves fans "[HASHTAG]#Headsgone[/HASHTAG]". Let's hope that happens with Afobe and Wolves would like Lafferty to come to them and shag his way round the black country.

Here's a bit of a leftfield suggestion - with all the forward options Liverpool have this season in Benteke, Sturridge, Firminho, Origi and Ings, what do you reckon the chances of them letting either of the last two names out on loan?

To be fair they did get thirty odd million from the Benteke sale, I'm sure they wouldn't be splashing the cash had they not sold him
