My issue with Gayle is that he won't really replace CJ if he gets injured.

This means we would end up playing 2 upfront, which won't work away from home and isn't really favoured at home these days due to the modern formations which allow 5 in midfield.

I don't really think he is a proven PL striker either, ok he has had a coupe of seasons and scored 8 and 10 I think. But it's not really proven is it? How many did Hooper get from appearances off the bench?

The reason we are looking for another striker I thought is in case CJ gets injured and/or to increase the quality of the squad. Not sure Gayle does either of those things. And as we are not really setup to play 2 upfront I don't see the point in getting him in.
He replaces Jerome in work rate, runs, and finishing. Hewould score more goals than Grabban, Winkle and Lafferty put together. He doesn't replace him as a target man or bulky hold up man.

Yes but that's only half of a lone striker. We need it all. And I'm not sure how you can say for certainty what he could and may not bring.

I liked the look of Andre Gray from Brentford.

....Ok....So do I, but he's only a touch taller than Gayle, def not a Jerome, and He's never played above the Championship...So don't get your logic.

I guess my point is we may need to get the wallet out to get the correct player rather than trying to raid a subs bench of another club for someone who is not really what we are looking for.

I 100% agree, and said a lot earlier in the thread, rather than Bournemouth and Watford signing a whole new squad for a lot of money, I want us to use the money they used to buy a new squad, on 2 new players. And make sure they were quality. We don't need a rebuild. Our squad is solid and had quality. We just need a quality boost in certain areas.

I'm not about doom and gloom.

Just thinking about what we need going forward.

To be honest, if Grabban had scored 1 or 2 then probably this debate would not be happening. But he didn't.

Then we ideally need a quality CB and lone Striker. After spending 4 out of 5 seasons in the PL surely we can afford £20m on those 2 positions?

If the Jerome goal had stood, we were given the blatant penalty and had gone on to win 3-2 would there still have been the panicky doom and gloom on here today?
I don't think so, but it was a really sudden reminder of what it's like every season we were in the Prem. The refs and Linesmen always screw us. We need to win against the team and compensate for the officials. That takes a lot of quality to survive. Plus see us deserve to win against a side we should have beaten...We all knew we needed a CB and a Striker. Saturday totally confirmed it.

There'd be less concern, 1950, but the urgent requirement for a CB and an improved striker option to CJ is still starkly obvious, if we are to get enough points to stay up. McNally will not want this repeat scenario of relegation "death" so I'm sure he's working like crazy to come up with the goods. I guess what adds to the concern is the seemingly strong successful recruitment by several teams likely to be around us come May.

That's what I've been saying. We could afford it, and it would be worth it with the massive hike in TV deal next season. Everyone else is going for it, because they know what's at stake.

As a team that went up through the playoffs its always harder as the teams who went up automatically have a head start.

This is where McNally earns his money.

Yes, I know him and Alex Neil will do all they can, it's just whether they push the boat out, or stay conservative. I admire the consirvative stance they take, and to still be in the Prem, but like Palace, West Brom and Stoke. There comes a point you need to push out that boat to become a solid Premiership regular.

We knew last Friday that ideally we needed a CB and a striker and, just as importantly, need to offload 3 or 4 to make room for them. It strikes me that if the decisions had gone our way and we had won 3-2 everybody would have been happy to let the transfer window take its course. Should we really be panicking just because of a shocking ref? Surely it is better to give AN and DM time to get who they want even if it takes longer than we would like.

I might be naive but I genuinely believe that for the right two players the Club would be prepared to spend a total of £20m but I don't think they will spend money for the sake of it.
