I see where your coming from, he is getting on a little but has the skill you need to get out the Championship.
I remember the season we purchased Rvw and we had Snodgrass and Redmond and the squad looked really good on paper and I was fairly sure we would stay up. Even with CH in charge. How wrong was I. It quickly became apparent that Martin was no centre back so we were shipping goals and we couldn't score in a brothel. I guess what I'm saying is that for all the back slapping of promotion I hope we are not blinded into thinking that our current squad is something we want to be going into the premier league with. It's not so much saying "it's ok we have got x,y and z so we don't need anyone else in that position" if someone comes up who we can afford that can add quality then we need to be looking at it. Let's remember that for everything Jerome is, he had to drop down a league to get regular football so I wouldn't pin all our hopes on him providing the bulk of the goals personally. If he was that good he would already have been playing in the premier league. Similar Story for Redmond inexperienced and awful shooting at times. We need to add quality and experience to the squad, this is expensive. No more gambles with players from abroad. Think of the money we wasted there. I hope we learnt the lessons from the last season in the premier league and add some real quality.
http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/wesley-hoolahan/profil/spieler/24589 Seems like his here till 2017. I'd like to see us Sign up the following. -Left Winger -Left Back/Olsson back up -A high end Centre Back -A quality attacking Mid We have a good squad this time round so I'd like to se us make two marquee signings this summer.
I really do feel confident Jerome could get 10 goals next year. I don't think he'll be first team all season but I also think Redmond could be consistently playing centrally by the end of the season. I really do think even if we signed nobody we'd have a good chance to stay up.
With respect, that's a ludicrous thing to say? Just because RvW and Elmander didn't work for us (playing Hughton's preferred "don't concede" tactics) doesn't mean every foreign player is going to be like that. Far from it. As long as they perform their role, then I don't give a monkey's where they're from.
I wouldn't be afraid of looking abroad, didn't Tettey cost us less than £2m? For sure there's a greater risk with players trying to adapt to a league, and I wouldn't want all our signings coming from abroad for that reason, but there's a lot better value available, and much more choice.
i think two or three big signings and a couple of bargains if they arise will be enough, its no coincidence that many players have improved under AN, johnson, jerome, whittaker, bassong, redmond and grabban, i feel with a good few games under their belts Vadis and Wolfswinkle will come good, i would laso like to see hooper stay and given a proper chance to show his worth. The thing we should be so greatful for is we have strong squad as is and so many options AND money in the bank and no debt. who would have dreamt this scenario only a few years back...
I agree. I'd even err on the side of caution with numbers of new signings - Neil has developed a fantastic team mentality and so we don't want anything to upset that - so no need for more than a few and even then not to walk straight into the starting line up. The major priority for me is getting Neil tied into a heftier contract. I don't want to see us quibbling over £1.5m like with Lambert.
What I meant was I would not tend to gamble on foreign players who have never played in any English leagues. I know there are some decent players out there but it's quite a gamble. It's not like we are going to be attracting stellar players from the top European sides. I mean look at Vadis, is he going to make the first team? Who knows?
How many minutes did Vadis play this season? To write him off after being injured and then not match fit seems a little premature, though I suppose technically you were not exactly writing him off. Given a full pre season to get fully up to speed I would expect him to be a regular squad player, starting some, on the bench for some.
I agree we had a good team on paper last time were in the Premiership, BUT, perhaps with AN in charge , we might not have been relegated. It is true that a few of the foreign imports struggled under CH's reign, but then again, so did a certain Mr Holt..........and we all know what he had achieved before CH took charge. So I believe our previous failure is more down to not having invested in a decent manager, rather than in "real quality " players as you suggested.
AN has said in the past that he will give the current crop of players a chance to prove themselves, but I feel with the transfer kitty he has at his disposal, he will certainly be making forays into the transfer market. I agree re Jerome, but certainly feel he has a role for us in the PL and I think that Redmond has improved over the last month or so and could be a valuable asset next season.
I still believe Redmond is more suited to a roving more central role. He seems to have a freer role lately, and we are seeing the benefits in his impact.
Just seen that Vital Norwich "have it on good authority" that RvW will not be in AN's plans for next season. Would have thought that AN would like to work with him to assess his capabilities and possible impact.
Do you have a link, please - I can't find anything? I'd be surprised if he's said that before meeting the guy properly and seeing him in action
The clear-out has begun - I think its all sensible stuff: http://www.canaries.co.uk/news/article/norwich-city-release-players-2473160.aspx
AN has said that he will keep the 'core' of the present squad which makes good sense. None of the 6 players released would come into that category if you look at their playing time last season. I think Turner will also leave as he and AN don't seem to see eye to eye. Both RvW and Lafferty are question marks and we'll just have to wait and see. O'Neil and Elliot Bennett are also on the fringe of the core squad and could stay or go depending on what new players come in. Miquel is a useful player in that he can play at either CB or LB. We'll have to see if AN considers him sufficient cover for those positions. As for Jerome, at Stoke he was played wide much of the time. Playing centrally and regularly, he has shown himself to be an effective CF who is also a good team player laying the ball off for others and pulling defenders out of position. I see him scoring around 12 goals in the PL (Holt scored 24 in the Championship and 14 in the PL). Dorrans has quickly fitted into the 'core' and we'll have to see if Odjidja-Ofoe can do the same given a fresh start this summer, but in effect he's like a new signing. That leaves a core squad of about 19 or 20, with about 5 or 6 positions to fill unless players like O'Neil, Lafferty and/or RvW stay.
It is in an article on Vital Norwich where the author has made the statement. Got the article from News Now on Norwichs page.
