Apparently, after initially wanting to stay and fight, Clint has now agreed a loan-to-perm move to Marseille in a separate deal to our Nkoudou one, huge shame in my opinion, every player deserves at least two seasons to prove their worth, especially ones who missed pre-season and were injured throughout the campaign.

While I agree, I’d be more disappointed to see Spurs youth players move on. There are only so many minutes, and a couple of AMs and perhaps a CM need to go elsewhere to get them. My thought would be there’s a real benefit in keeping the youth players from the point of view of team cohesion. I know I like it as a fan, and I think other fans do as well.

Agreed. As harsh as it would be on Njie, I'd much rather see Onomah and Pritchard given the opportunity to flourish instead. You'll be needing a new tagline by the way ;)

In other news today, Stoke's £13m bid for Joe Allen has been accepted. Useful signing for them if it goes ahead. In the other direction, Newcastle have accepted Liverpool's £25m bid for Wijnaldum. Not entirely sure what they plan to do with him, although a midfield containing him, Mane, Coutinho and Firmino will resemble an Ossie Ardiles side.

I agree completely with this I think Onomah showed enough in his appearances last year and I definitely would like to see Pritchard given a fair crack too, to the point where I would be happy to see Chadli depart too particularly if we recoup most of the N'Koudou fee in the process.

With regards pool, when you add Lallana, Milner, & Markovic in as options as well then they maybe they are planning for at least one leaving, then again Origi and Ings could also occupy the wider roles, so they could go full ossie!

Mario Gotze signs for former club Dortmund for a fee in the region of £18m, plus add-ons. Would he have been worth the risk?

Talking of risks, Alen Halilovic completed his transfer to Hamburg today for just £5m. Now there's a flutter I would've loved to see us take. Just 20 years old and with more than something of the Modric about him, Halilovic is probably desperate to get his career back on track after a frustrating few years at Barca. I'd imagine the latter's usual insistence of an insultingly low buy-back clause (believed to be around £10m) put off a number of clubs, including (theoretically) our own.

Talking of buy-back clauses, they should be outlawed. Makes a mockery of the transfer system and unfairly stacks the deck in favour of the sugar daddies.

Agree on the aspect of giving more minutes to Pritch and Josh, just a shame that N'Jie's time at the club will always be left with a "what if?". To join after pre-season and then pick up a long term injury means we'll never know how good (or bad) he could've been, he didn't really get enough minutes in the time he was fit either. Best of luck to him.

It wouldn't get past the competition laws to outlaw buy-back clauses.

Buy-back clauses should count as third-party ownership. Nothing will change though, unfortunately.

Talking of daddies, wasn't the prattery of Halilovics' the reason that we never signed him in the first place.

Their practical effect is little different from a share of a sell-on fee. They reduce the risk for both the buying and selling clubs by making the player cost less with the benefit of any increase in value going more to the seller. Not sure why they are a problem

Clinton appears to agree with you, judging by his face in this pic...

...or maybe he's only just seen Hipster Chadli.

They put the selling club in a no-lose position and it's always the more powerful clubs that include them.
Barca and Real are the main culprits and it's given them a really ****ty advantage, especially in their own league.
It hands all of the risk to one party and removes most of the chance of them benefiting from that player advancing.

It's not just in their own league, though: Los Ladrones were quick to spirit Morata away from Juve this summer, and there's a similar clause in the deal that took Ozil to Woolwich - while Barca could take back Bellerin or Deulofeu anytime they wished

...however, it's not like we're in any position to slate the practice considering we inserted a buyback clause into the deal that took Luongo to Swindon a few years ago

Oh yeah, on the subject of Barca, I guess we can rule out Sandro Ramirez...

Buy back clauses does smack of the bigger club behaving like a petulant child that can't bear the thought of somebody else owning anything that is even remotely good. A bit like the way Chelsea, Real, Man Utd, Barca, etc stockpile up on players that they don't actually really need or want. Just hoover them up so their rivals/potential rivals can't have them. Reeks of fear.

Great news on Wimmer. Solid back up for Jan and he could push his way ahead of him at the start of this season if he picks up the form he had last season.

Brilliant news regarding Big Kev, if he continues playing like how he did last season then it won't be long 'til we'll be saying "Jan's great backup for Big Kev".

I agree that legally and technically there is nothing wrong with them, but they do make a mockery out of the transfer system as you are essentially 'renting' the services of a particular player for a short to medium term period of time. I see it as no different to a very expensive long-term loan.

As PNP, the fact that the tax-dodging, government funded denizens of Madrid and Barca tend to exercise this approach far more than other teams, suggests that they see it as a foolproof way of hoovering up young talent from across the globe, farming that talent out to prove itself and then buying it back at a marked-down price that is agreed upon long before the buying club has an inkling of what the player is actually worth. Halilovic could go on to become a world beater at Hamburg and Barca will sign him back for a meager £15m when his true market value is £50m.

The peculiar thing is how few PL clubs insert similar clauses in their dealings with promising youngsters. I bet United wish they'd put one in Pogba's contract, same for Chelsea with Be Bruyne. Although having said that, IIRC we inserted one when we sold Hoddle to Monaco <laugh>
