I think the lure of CL could have been used as leverage. Every other club uses it. He wouldn't be the first player to risk playing less for that.

Not necessarily: as he's a quote-unquote £30m player, if we sell him for £15m next summer, and given the state of the market that figure is not unrealistic, that's £9m in profit.

His past doesn't particularly bother me, there are plenty of strikers who are playing for lesser clubs that could do a job at a bigger side. The style of player is what has interested me since Poch took over, we know the gaffer likes hard working players and Long is exactly that, plus he has the pace factor which is the only thing Harry lacks. If he can be got for sub £10m then I'd say it's a no-brainer.

So we only pay £6m each season? Amounting to a potential £30m is he lasts 5 years?
If so, £6m was worth the risk.

I'd love to officially know whether this is true, as it seems much more like a deal Levy would come up with. A £30m premium for someone who everyone knew so much about in terms of what you'd get/not get from him doesn't seem like the sort of business Levy would sanction. - especially with all of the hit and miss (mainly miss) transfers from a few years ago.
It might seem a bit like wishful thinking, but it seems too out of character from Levy to be true, IMO.

It's more likely that Levy started circulating this rumour the morning after he woke up and realised what he'd done.

I see Sissoko as the ultimate post-international tournament signing **** up with annoying bells and whistles attached. He sits in the same waste bin as Dumitrescu. Paulinho was also signed on the basis of a few games in a tournament but in his case, one that was completely meaningless, a bit like the player himself. The difference is that everyone knew Sissoko had done bugger all for 3 years leading up to the tournament and that there was a fair chance that normal service would be resumed pretty soon after. We needed a clever player who would add goals and fit into an energetic style of play. We bought a lumpen oaf, who has no history of scoring large numbers of goals and who picks when he feels like turning up and spends most of his time giving interviews that indicate he is at least our captain, if not a leader and legend.

Even if we'd paid the £12m we bid originally, he still wouldn't be the player we needed. I can't think of another player since Gregorsz Raziak that all Spurs fans were totally non-plussed abut us signing [that includes Darren Bent and Adebayor]. I'd be amazed if we could give him back to Newcastle at the end of this season but I can see us selling him on for a 60-70% mark-down in the summer. A complete ****ing waste of scarce resources.

Why would Ashley agree to it. It's worth buying him and selling after a year if he doesn't depreciate in value too much.

Has any player ever been relegated from the premier league and fetched a colossal fee like this? I know the money spent nowadays is extortionate, but are there any others that went for a staggering amount relative to when they were sold?
It just seems like a ridiculous amount for any player in a relegated side, let alone Sissoko.

I don't know enough about Ashley, but one thing we do know is that Levy likes to balance the books. £6m in staggered payments with it coming to an end once we sell on seems much more like a Levy deal, than an upfront net spend of £30m. - especially for someone who every Tom, Dick and Harry knew was a massive risk at that price. Seems so strange.

I can think of a certain Charlton striker that a certain club paid £16.5m for after Charlton were relegated from the Premier League...

To quote Fergie, this kind of deal "has Daniel Levy`s fingerprints all over it", I wouldnt be surprised if this is true, it is very unlike Levy to spend a guaranteed £30m on a 27 year old with little chance of at least getting his money back, it doesn`t stack up.

Surely the only way the £6m/season thing is true is if there is also a decreasing % sell-on clause for Newcastle. I doubt Ashley is that stupid if we've all seen the possibilities of buying for £6m and then pocketing a nice profit.

If we broke even on Barren Dent and (technically) made a profit on Paulinho, it's not entirely unrealistic.

Juventus and Inter Milan could move again for Tottenham's France midfielder Moussa Sissoko, having missed out on the 27-year-old in the summer. (Calciomercato)

    Oh go on then
