I don't think it would've been patronising to have just politely DM'd or even replied saying where they went wrong.

I think at the least it would've been better than condemning someone for what was very much likely an innocent and oblivious mistake due to a different generational upbringing.

When I was growing up we were told to say coloured gentleman or lady ,calling someone anything else was considered racist back then. I will be 60 next week so kinda know where smithy is coming from that's the way it was back then ,I don't think smithy meant any harm ,its just a generation thing.

I think we should start posting it, even if for ****s and giggles. It's golden that place. One or two seemed genuine to be fair, the rest were educated guessers just like most of the Twitter ITK's today. It's so easy to act ITK now if you know where to look and how to structure posts.

Who was the dick who'd post riddles and used phrases on there like "yellow is really close, blue is also on the cards"? People lapped it up and when we did actually sign someone, they'd then say - "there's yellow", as if they had any actual ideal that player was joining . I remember as well one was talking about "saving the lad from the forest" to which people at the time said it was about trying to sign Jamaal Lascelles from when he was at Notts Forest. Ahh the memories are coming back, I'm gonna have to pop over later.

While I agree @bigsmithy9 probably meant no harm, I also think @KingHotspur has this right. It has not been considered polite to refer to 'coloured people' for decades. Surely everyone should have spotted that by now.

Yes of course using those terms back then were common

We aren’t in those times now though, it’s 2020 so no excuse to still be using outdated terms (goes for sexual as well as racial terms). If I see anyone using it then I will 100% call them out on it like ANY decent person should instead of making weak excuses.

They did a news report and said the N word when reporting on a story. They have come out and apologised for it but that’s just one example of why I don’t see the BBC as being some amazing correct organisation

Person/people of colour is the appropriate at the moment, coloured isn’t. I’m sure in the future things will change again and there will be another word.

They said it because it was quite an important part of the report, they have backed down because some idiots were "offended" that they used the word (a word you can hear many times per day in records and films).
Perhaps we should dumb the news down and just report that someone used a nasty word.

Thousands were offended, millions weren't.
Probably right about me using the word idiot though, i was out of order there.
Some people just look for something to be offended by so they can claim offence.

To be honest i thought the bbc were fine reporting it. From what i read the family of the heinous crime wanted it in all of its nastiness to show racism in this attack was well and truly alive.

I think the mistake by the bbc if there was one was doing it live at a early time of day.

I disagree with the dj but its his right to quit and protest against it

Think it is wrong to call those who objected to the use of the N word in the news report idiots.
People had a lot of reasons to object to it and it is not just "a nasty word". The report was about a young black NHS worker who is also a part time DJ getting a severe beating by a group of racists which has left him with severe injuries...you demean yourself and the incident by saying...

"Perhaps we should dumb the news down and just report that someone used a nasty word."

There is an ongoing debate about the use of the N word in films and music and literature and the context of the use is important.

I think allowing a white reporter to use it when using the term "N word" would have more than clearly demonstrated the racism was not right...that does not make me right but neither does it make me an "idiot".

Edit...just seen your other post re you correcting the use of the word idiot...I think that was good of you.

I am much more concerned with racism that affects peoples lives. Like the racism that Rose suffers when he travels first class on a train or drives his no doubt flashy car. That shows how people in positions of power still hold racist views. Rose is a wealthy young man but it still hurts him, just imagine how much worse that is for someone without that prop.
Just because people don't use certain words or express outright racism does not mean it has gone away. Where do you think all those racists in South Africa went when Nelson Mandella changed things. They are still there they have just been quietened, they don't all become decent human beings overnight. The same all over the world. On the surface there is far less racism in Britain than when I was a lad, the key phrase is on the surface. Changing words with each generation may ease the conscience but it doesn't do much for the underlying problem.

I'm not sure we want to create a whole new page, it did come out of transfer talk and description of players so it's difficult to separate some posts. My feeling is to leave it as is but if the other mods disagree or more posters want the change then we will make it.

We are struggling for home grown players, so it is highly unlikely Sessegnon will be leaving.
