It's like saying that, as not all terrorists are of Middle Eastern and North African descent, it's not racist for rival fans to call Nacer Chadli "terrorist" - which is handy, as fans of several clubs have done just that...

I think Bruce probably would've known because if transfers whether it be sales or incomings are affected, a manager would need to be made aware of that. Villa themselves had an initial asking price of £15m for Grealish so that tells me they were willing to sell too, it was only once the takeover was complete/ near complete that the asking price rose to £25m and by the time we finally matched it after roughly our third or fourth bid, Villa basically gave us the middle finger.

That's fair enough if you personally don't rate him, I think he'd walk into Spurs at the moment. Had a really good season too, 13 goal contributions (7 goals 6 assists) in 26 league games is really impressive, especially when like you say he's surrounded by dross.

We were always traditionally a top 6 club with a massive following, that had slipped into years of mid table mediocrity through poor ownership and general mismanagement..... a sleeping giant as it were. We were massively underachieving as a club, Levy has brought us back to our level financially, and has slowly turned us into top 6 regulars on the pitch. He had an easier job doing that with a club like us rather than with a regular mid table club with a fraction of our support though. Now Levy`s task is to provide success on the pitch, and that means silverware, we have all been waiting long enough, 20 years is a long time to deliver 1 paltry League Cup win.

Yeah that’s mad. It shows the expectations we have of Dele to say he’s been poor, he was unplayable in the first few weeks under Jose but reverted back to previous form of just going anonymous too often with rare flashes of class. Really hope that with everyone back fit Jose can get him back to his old form, 2015 to early 2018 Dele was fantastic, need that guy back ASAP once football restarts.

Although it’s pretty damning that of our current squad, in my opinion only 3 players should be guaranteed a starting spot: Kane, Son and Lo Celso. Lloris would make it on default at the moment whilst arguments could be made for Sanchez and Bergwijn but the inconsistency/ drop in level of too many players is worrying. Go back a couple years and there wouldn’t have been a single player in the XI I’d have felt deserved to be dropped, massive difference.

Was Dele's decline at the same time as we started to have the injuries , I always see Dele as one of those players who try too hard when the team around him changes . To me Dele is at his best when Harry is on top form , I've said before the seem to have a good knowledge of each others game

Dele is potentially a problem. Not just because of his iffy form but because of where he wants to fit in. In a 4231 both he and and GLC want to play behind the striker, and you definitely lose something of the Argentine if you play him in the pivot or wide left. In a 433 he’s competing with NDombele, Gedson and probably Winks for a spot in midfield alongside GLC and, hopefully, a DM.

He’s a special player and so dangerous on his day. He’s capable of pulling truly special moments from nowhere and can boss a game. But those performances haven’t been coming. Jose clearly likes him and if he can turn him around then it’s a nice problem to have. Would anyone consider selling him? Especially if it meant we got a top DM instead?

This leads to an interesting point

The people who say we should follow Saltypool's example and sell Harry Kane so we can invest elsewhere are so far wide of the mark that they have left the plane of existence the mark exists in: Coutinho was never the main source of Saltypool's goals, he was the creative fulcrum through midfield, which was key for Rodgers as he plays through the middle but Norbert's system has a stiff midfield base as the main source of creativity is Alexander-Arnold and Robertson bombing up from fullback coupled with Michael Oliver giving Salah and Mane as many penalties and offside goals as they want, which meant that Coutinho was expendable

So for us to sell Kane would suicidal, because he's the main source of goals and this is what the DGCkheads cannot seem to understand even when politely and firmly asking them to cast their minds back to what happened when Keane and Berbatov were spirited away in the same summer...six or seven times

On the other hand, an argument could be made for selling Dele if - and the word if is pretty goddamn important in this sentence - if we change our system

If we continue playing 4231 then there's clearly a place for Dele in the number ten role so courteously vacated by Christian Eriksen eighteen months ago, although that would require a bit of shuffling players around after all Son and Lo Celso are expected to be in the attacking trio, and we also have Bergwijn and Lucas in contention too, and we don't want to chop and change for every game as that's what we saw in LAdPCeV-B's second season as he tried to juggle two entire midfields worth of players - but if we play 433 it gets just as complicated as Kane and Son are nailed-on in the front three while Lo Celso and *fingers crossed* NEW DM are nailed on for the midfield three, meaning that either way Dele would be causing headaches trying to figure out where to fit him in

On a similar note, there's a reason why I'm all for selling Lucas this...whenever, if a bid were to come in: Bergwijn can be expected to start in either a 4231 or 433 so it's not like we'd have to find a replacement this summer, and given we can just point to his hat trick in Amsterdam we could easily get £25-30m for him even in an austere window as we're expecting, and it has to be said Lucas has been dire this season as he's best described as a place where possession goes to die given he's amassed the grand total of 3 assists in 39 games across all competitions this season, and to put that into context Erik Lamela has 6 assists in 29 games across all competitions and he;s not a guaranteed starter

Eriksen was the other player it was mooted we could ‘do a Coutinho’ with, but we sold him too late and didn’t get the fee we’d have wanted. Even at the peak of Poch’s tenure it was never 100% comfortable fitting them both in, though it worked damn well for a time anyway.

I’d be surprised if we sold Lucas. He’s probably the least versatile of our forward players but we currently have 4 wingers for two slots, one of which (Lamela) I do love but he’s only fit half the time. I think Moura is here for a while yet, though Sonny and Bergwijn would be my starters.

If selling Dele was guaranteed to somehow secure us a top DM who could be the lynchpin of our midfield for the next 5 years then I’d sorely consider it. But football isn’t that simple, least of all this year. And I wouldn’t even dream of considering putting Kane in the same equation.

If Poch's plan was to use THAT BASTARD DIAMOND full time, the obvious question is...why the hell was he planning that?

No, wait, let me try again...

The obvious question was where players fit in that system, or to be more accurate (as it's obvious where everyone fit in defence and central midfield) where players fit in the final third

Kane is a no-brainer as he was in the out-and-out striker role, and it's equally fair to assume Lo Celso was supposed to play behind the front two - but after that there's a few unanswered questions
Son - out-and-out striker or the deeper striker?
Dele - deeper striker or behind the front two?
Lucas - deeper striker or behind the front two?

It gets more complicated once you throw Dybala into the mix - while his role would be obvious, as he'd be playing off Kane, that then asks where Son and Dele fit in (and, I'll add to that, I've long suspected that Bruno Fernandes was the original plan for this role considering we were also in negotiations for Lo Celso while negotiating for Fernandes, coupled with how our interest in Dybala came about once it was obvious Sporting were looking for a Batshuayi Special)

Again with that system, which has mercifully been consigned to the dustbin of history and/or copies of FIFA 20 for people whose consoles have no internet connection, Dele and Lucas both occupied this fuzzy space where there was a way to play them but they didn't leap out as being first-choice in any of those roles given the personnel we had available

It's certainly true that playing a front two would be the best role for Dele, effectively having him in the VDV role...but, yeah, there's this Korean bloke who'd also be first-choice in that one too

We haven’t had balance in the squad for a good few years, it’s true. Outside of FIFA or Football Manager nobody gets a perfectly balanced squad of course but I do think we’ve overloaded on options in attack for a while with our recruitment - to the extent that we can’t fit all the players into a logical starting XI - while somewhat ignoring our issues at DM and FB.

Has its pros and cons to be fair.

“Arsenal ****ed by a Moron” would be a great headline.

“Moron misses a sitter” however isn’t.

I see Levy has told Jose to forget any budget ideas this season <whistle>

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has said Premier league sides will not be "spending crazy money" in the next transfer window. (Sky Sports)
