The only thing that makes me think this is a definite no goer is that Chelsea will not want to play any part in helping us improve our chances of beating them to fourth place. Why would they? I actually think there is more chance of Bale agreeing a wage cut and coming back.
Barca have bid €100m for Richarlison. It came later than usual this window, but silly season is officially upon us.
As I said earlier, I wouldn't be against it in principle. The whole not playing for a rival club is a load of nonsense in the modern game as the vast majority of players have zero local/emotional links to their clubs anyway. It only hurts and deserves criticism when done in a ****ty way and/or the player in question does happen to have emotional ties to the selling club. Hence Sol Campbell remains the unsurpassed archetype of bellendum in this category of transfers. Bottom line is we're desperate for a proper focal point up front. In all honesty I think it could be the difference between having a shout for top 4 on the one hand and missing out entirely on the other. Word on the twitter vine seems to be that aside from our general cheapskatedness in the market, the fact that we need this acquisition to have an instant impact means that we're reluctant to shell out on a player without evidence that they can hack it in the PL. Hence the deals for W Jose and Piatek were loans with options to buy or drastically reduced fees up front. We were never budging from that position. There is a notorious shortage of quality out there in January as clubs are so reluctant to sell anyone who features prominently in their plans. Case in point: if I was Ancelotti I would bite Barca's hand off for the €100m they've offered for Richarlison as he's worth maybe a third of that. I would do so knowing that my Everton side won't go down but also won't really threaten the top 4 this season, so going into the summer with a nice war chest would seem sensible. But he can't do that. Richarlison, despite being vastly overrated, is seen as a key part of Everton's future and an already disgruntled fanbase would riot if they sold him now. Giroud ticks the PL proven box very strongly. He'd bring with him a wealth of experience and a CV filled with a decent amount of trophies. And with Gazzanigga already at the club, he wouldn't even be the best looking guy here. If it's a loan or a short term contract to give us more time to look for a long term option, I'm all for it. But hell will freeze over before Chelsea do business with us.
Willian Jose’s been pulled from the Sociedad squad again. Could be reviving that move now that Piatek is seemingly off to Berlin.
And typically they now have us over the proverbial barrel as our #1 target has moved elsewhere and we were already desperate to begin with.
Spurs didn’t want to overpay for Piatek as ultimately he will be back up for Kane, signing Bergwijn gives the club more options as Son/Lucas can play as the centre forward with him taking a place on the wing. I wouldn’t be surprised if no striker is signed.
Finally... https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/01/29/danny-rose-join-newcastle-loan-tottenham-end-season/
He has had his "moments" over the last year or two, but overall, I think he has been a superb player for the club.
Clearing out those who no longer want to be here is a good thing, especially Rose, as he's clearly not fit. It's better all round that he starts again somewhere else and we don't have to put up with him slagging the club off in The Sun. He's been a fraction of the player that he was for some time. He's also been a divisive force since 'that interview'. I've nothing to say against Eriksen but Rose is a different matter.
To be brutally honest too, whilst Rose has been a good servant to the club in terms of years (13 I believe), exactly how many seasons has he genuinely been good? 4, if that? He scored the worldy on his debut but he only really shone under Pochettino - and don’t get me wrong, Rose really did blossom (excuse the pun) under Poch - outside of that, Rose hasn’t really offered much on the pitch. I still respect him immensely for giving us many years of service but 13 years and just 156 Premier League appearances is very low. To put into comparison, Dele already has 148 Prem appearances in 4 and a half years, Eriksen had 226 in just 6 and a half years!
I really think we will be moving forward from this window on. Now that Eriksen and hopefully Rose have moved on and with the new players coming in Jose can start to fashion the team as he want's it without what I think was a certain amount of politics in the make up of the team. A new project is beginning, one that needs to consolidate Spurs as a top Champions League playing team if they are to live up to their billing. The pressure on Mourinho to deliver is now on, if not this season then certainly the next but the January activity from Spurs suggests they expect delivery THIS season.
Physioroom have Ben's return date as 2nd February. So hopefully we'll see him back for the cup replay next week. No need to rush him back for the Man City game .
