This is what I was referring to with Toby and Eriksen in particular. If they end up being sold, it’s a game changer for me. Just to be clear, I don’t actually think we’ve even strengthened to be honest. - I just don’t think we’re weaker either as things stand. Some fans are losing their **** right now, which I don’t understand.
I have no idea, he wouldn’t exactly tell me would he? If someone was deadwood in his eyes he’d sack them though.
Contracts in recruitment are generally pretty blunt and made quite clear: Don’t bill enough/ resource candidates well enough and you’re binned.
Don’t disagree with any of this, mate. You make some excellent points. All I was getting at in my previous post/s is that as things stand, we’re not weaker, IMO. Regarding Skipp and parrot, I don’t think it’s that black and white. If Winks is injured, it’s more likely we’d use Eriksen in that position before we see Skipp. Parrot is going to be well down the pecking order, and Tanganga is unlikely to be required with 5 other players who can play at CB. If the window ends with those 4 things you mention, it can generally be seen as pretty successful. But at the same time we’re treading a very fine line with it potentially being a complete disaster, despite breaking our transfer record. There’s a huge 7-8 days coming up. At the moment, I’m happy we’ve managed to keep certain players, and signed a player in the position we were most desperate for. But as you allude to, there’s a lot of work to be done with contracts, more incomings, and player sales. As I’ve said before, my opinion could change massively a week from now. It’s one thing leaving incomings and departures so late in the window, but failing all together by deadline day is inexcusable this time.
I am really not sure that the contracts that footballers are given are comparable to many other employment contracts. In most businesses if you do not meet your targets you are likely to be managed out. I also think that we should remember that no one at the club has called anyone 'deadwood' or even suggested that some of these people are leaving. This is a fans forum and our views are not necessarily representative of the clubs.
You’d be lucky to get a three month contract in recruitment. You keep your job if you’re good. You don’t if you’re bad.
I suspect that if they thought you were in the top ten recruiters in the world you might get a different offer but you would then be quite interested in whether they would honour it if you had a bad patch. We need to aim at players in the top ten in each position so need everything else right to attract them.
If I were one of the top ten recruiters in the world chances are I’d have my own firm. But if I didn’t, then I’d no doubt be offered a lovely salary and commission structure but I highly doubt I’d be given a contract worth x amount of years. Generally you usually get a three month probation period before a solid contract is written out and even then, the basis of that contract is always down to performance. You bill well you stay, you don’t you go. A firm will never keep you for a prolonged period of time if you’re costing them more money than you’re making. As for Spurs, I agree, we need top players in each position and I’ve often said that. Hence why Trippier had to go as he was no longer a top four calibre RB (and why I personally don’t rate Winks too, at least from a first XI perspective) and also why the likes of Wanyama, Nkoudou, Onomah and one or two others need to be binned. I have nothing personal against these players but they are, in footballing terms at least, deadwood - players not needed who are wasting space and wages in the squad. There’s not really any other terminology I can use unless I just call them “**** players”, which is probably harsher and less accurate seeing as Wanyama isn’t actually ****.
Trippier went to Atletico Madrid who are also in the market for top ten players so perhaps he is better than we think. The difference between a top ten player and a top twenty one isn't that big in practice and it is very harsh to describe the latter as ****.
Then hes not getting rid of the deadwood. Not only does that mean they are taking up a slot, one for a player to be bought in or one that an academy player can take, but they are also taking up time and effort from the coaches and a nice wage packet home. Even the most mediocre of players are moving for some good sums, im sure levy could get rid but just not at ridiculous prices. Obviously its not all down to him but are you saying that you boys couldnt have shifted nkoudou, jansen at cheaper rates?
I hope you stay CK regardless. Your contributions are always interesting and very well thought out and often spark great debates. Now I am not going to throw any more compliments your way so put your horse in our stable and stand your ground you ornery old bastard. I bet it's the old bit that will piss you off most.
No matter how we approach this phenomenom of ENIC being tight bastards, the fact remains. This is a football club and we need players to do our manager justice otherwise. into the last 10 days of the window and we are discussing Levy's financial tactics with a few probably already lined up with excuses on his behalf and vilifying posters who are concerned at the lack of signings. This club has had 2 years and we have managed to scrape Ndombele through the door going into the last week of the window...heyy but Levy did one over on Arsenal by bumping the price up for some crock of **** so lets give Levy a gold badge for the bantz. Our front 3 still needs real competition or they will resort to type, i.e coasting it if we dont get some serious replacements in....tick tock ENIC
We know he’s not though because in the Premier League alone; Walker, Trent, Azpilicueta, Wan-Bissaka and then arguably Pereira, Doherty and Coleman are all better. We need a RB who’s at least on a par with the first four I’ve listed in order to keep top four and above hopes alive. If you want to be a top four team you need to have players regarded as one of the best four in their position in the country. Trippier no longer filled that criteria and so we sold him. I wish him nothing but the best with Atleti but I’m glad he’s gone. Poch now has a decision to make in that if he thinks Foyth/ KWP can become a top four player or if he needs to bring someone else in.
I actually am not totally against what @PowerSpurs is saying. Players go through bad form and even bad years but bounce back. Whilst i dont think trippier is a top class rb and had a poor year last year i think he has the ability to be in a side that could win things, certainly a top 4 one. Case in point, sissoko, **** 2 years great last year. Llorente looked like a donkey 2 years ago but showed his worth last year. Jan i believe had a bad year (alongside everyone else) in avbs final year but has been brilliant. I also bet you arent saying sell dier even though hes dropped off the face of the earth recently (you are going to tell me hes injured for half of it)
Half of the fan base wanted Trippier gone even when I thought he was good, so I think some were seeing things in him before I was. Ultimately he was so bad last season that it was too far gone to give a second chance. The fact Trippier himself said that he heard rumours he was being sold well before the season finished probably says in itself what Poch felt about him. Sissoko is a rarity. He was likely kept due to us probably not finding a buyer and his breakthrough happened because Dembele’s body failed him whilst Wanyama and Dier also had injury problems. He took his final chance you could say and made it count. Llorente was never really that bad, he was just underused and under-utilised. Jan was bad under AVB/ Sherwood... need I say more on that? You’ll find a good number of Spurs fans that do actually want Dier sold. For me, it’s last chance saloon.
