The lunatic fringe (and I include most Talkshite presenters in this) are saying we should just buy someone, and assuming that is all there is to it. But that is not all there is to it of course. Not that logical argument makes any difference to these people but here are just a few thoughts: > Who is available (the assumption being that anyone we need is) > Who is available for a reasonable price (which of course would be massively inflated given our injury situation) > Are we buying cover for the next two months, in which case is the player prepared to not probably even make the bench after that > Are we buying a first team player, in which case do people realise how much it would cost to get better than we have (when fit) and also go back to the first two points. > Normally players need a full pre-season to fit into a team. Why do people therefore assume this mysterious new player will be up to speed without any previous contact with the team. > Will the player fit in with the team, and the way Poch wants to play. There have been many examples of expensive signings of good players that simply make the team worse. Our team is exceptional, you have to be very careful not to damage its dynamic. But any rational discussion is of course lost on these people. I think they want us to spend for the sake of spending, assuming money is the automatic solution. Levy spends nothing, hundreds of millions spent on a stadium doesn't count as it comes from the Bank of Fairyland and does not have to be earned or paid back. And when pressed to give some names of people we could buy? Only names that fail one or more of the above comments. For example Ibrahimovic was mentioned. A guy that is out to pasture in the States, has ability but an even bigger ego. Even when he came to the PL I thought he made ManU worse by slowing down their game, completely contrary to the way we play. Also would surely not fit into our squad.
If Pochettino goes down this path, then you are probably looking at 2012 (Saha and Nelsen) for reference. Specifically : - PL seasoned players - happy to be playing in the PL and domestic cups for the rest of the season in a team such as Spurs as injury cover only - are not going to be stupid on wages - are available now But as you said, who is in the set of players that meet this criteria.
It's difficult to get someone in as you say it will cost a fortune to replace our injured players and the fact they won't be up to our fitness levels that poch demands makes it pointless .stick with what we have got and make the most of it I say no point throwing money away on players who might get a game and might not till next season.it's a shame Vinnie hasn't worked out for us but reading between the lines poch doesn't rate him so we need to sell and release money for a better signing in the summer.coys
While he is still a Spurs player and the injury plague endures, I expect Pochettino to be using him to the maximum level possible. Similarly for GKN. < Pragma over dogma >
Why are we always talking about needing back up players when the reality is we need players that are going to compete for starts even when Kane, Alli and Son are fit?
That's the thing about the lunatic fringe that gets me: they whinge when we don't sign somebody, they whinge when we sign Stambouli-type stopgaps, they whinge when we don't pay megabucks for players (like we did with Alli and Dier...) all of which begs the question what the **** would make them happy? In terms of players who are available that could go into the first team, the main options for us break down into three categories * Players in the last six months of their contract (i.e. Rabiot) * Players with release clauses (i.e. Grillitsch, Lobotka) * Players in their league's off-season (i.e. Barrios) Since we can rule out Rabiot due to being a headcase with a toxic agent who several of PSG's squad have said they won't miss, that means the second and third categories are far more likely - but then we'd have the lunatic fringe whinging about cheap deals, not spending megabucks, and why the **** haven't we signed Mbappe to play as Kane's understudy?
What about the "reality" of players in the squad who are sitting idle while being paid, who should be getting game time right now ??
Nothing. What would make me happy ?? Transferring all of them to Citeh or Chelsky like we did with Spurlock. He seems to be happy there, so I assume they all will be too.
KWP's the main one for that, what with Aurier's off field issues and Trippier being bloody awful lately - and considering we were resting Trippier over Christmas due to various niggling injuries, having him play 90 minutes in every game just a few weeks later makes no sense
I'd prefer Vinnie to be given a second chance to be honest but I don't think Poch sees it that way who knows you could be right and he will get some gametime
I don’t get why Poch freezes players out. Surely giving them minutes and putting them in the shop window would benefit everyone.
The thing is we just guess what's going on in and around the club only poch and his staff really know what's going on and they make decisions based on what they see especially around day to day training maybe he thinks some players don't put enough effort in or have attitude problems or settling in a new country with different lifestyles who find it hard to adapt.
He confirmed he went to Citeh. Spurlock may be a merc glory hunter, but even he has sufficient morals not to go to Chelsky.
We had this before with AVB. If the player is not being a total arse disrupting the squad or being disrespectful to the coaching staff (Adebayor) , and is at least participating in all training sessions (so they have core fitness etc) , then they are at least ready to play when events come to pass as they have. If all the above holds and Pochettino is still not using them, then his dogma may cost Spurs dearly come May (and no : Levy tight-arse blah blah blah is not the reason) .
Jansen has I think played 2 matches now for the under 21s, those are the first matches that he has played in for about a year, his fitness will be no where near the levels Poch requires - Sterling will be miles ahead of him currently, and will be the player to come in if needed, probably at Palace on Sunday
The other option is to loan in a player for 6 months like ' they ' are doing with Higuain . BIG difference is that that they have 41 players out on loan including strikers ( Batshy ). Could we go massively wrong with Malcolm?
Interesting 'transfer/Brexit-related article. Good read around legislative impact on young players and clubs across UK & Europe.
So in summary, if you are : 1. A top EU player, then business as usual (signing for a top PL club on top wages) 2. A meh EU player, then coming to the PL is going to get a lot harder 3. A PL club who has a lot of players in #2, better get your academy and UK scouting networks upgraded ASAP 4. An overseas club who owns players in #2, better revamp your revenue models ASAP (as the 'rinse a PL club' regime is going to die)
