Except we’re not even doing what Brighton are doing. We’ve just either largely overpaid for mediocre players or signed a bunch of youngsters that aren’t playing much.
This was actually what a lot of people said and wanted - use Brighton’s/ Dortmund’s models but with better resources. Part of the problem too is that those models require managers who can coach and develop those players - Ange unfortunately hasn’t been able to develop a player so far.
I think that is an important observation. That is probably at the heart of the 'Spurs' situation. We have to achieve a level within the bounds of remaining a profitable business. Clubs get into financial dificulties because they are going for glory at all costs. We don't do that and that means that if we are ever to win the league under the present ownership it will be due to luck rather than design. Reaching top 4 provides sufficient financial rewards to sustain the club and that therefore is the aim. If we were to break this mould the only way IMO, apart from a change in ownership is the outside investement ENIC appear to be pursuing or a long term manager who manages our player resources in a way that will exceed their individual level. Changing managers just maintains the ENIC financial model.
We laughed at Danny Rose because saying he had to Google someone who just played in a Europa League final for Ajax made him sound as far removed from football knowledge as the average Twitter bonehead who insisted we signed Son to sell replica shirts in the Far East As for the second paragraph, that doesn't stack up with how the approach works: Dortmund and Ajax are the two most obvious examples of using the same approach and they don't suddenly switch from their approach to sign a Big Name™ because Something Something Ambition Something, because the two don't mesh with one another - as Ajax discovered when spending way above their usual levels to bring in Steven Bergwijn Now there is a way to make the two mesh with one another, as you see Ligue 1 teams like Lille or Lyon buy big early and then fill out with the data-based players, and that does seem to be roughly what we were doing in the summer by getting Solanke in relatively early (albeit he was also a data-based signing, though I suspect his birth certificate likely played a role in the final decision) before Yang and Odobert followed, but as with everything else asking Spurs fans what they want is a waste of time and effort as they always change their mind the second they get what they were asking for five minutes ago
Your transfer policy would be simplified if you had any academy / young players signed cheap playing or being back up . We for example have Jones , Quansah ,TAA . Bradley , Elliott
The cynic in me genuinely wonders if we’re actively seeking outside investment. Seems to have been a rumour for about 3-4 years now and nothing ever materialises. There’s been the stuff with Najafi, QSI, Staveley and I’m sure one or two others I’ve forgotten but nothing comes to fruition, likewise with the stadium naming rights. Part of me wonders if it’s a similar ploy like what we’ve seen at the end of certain transfer windows over some years where Spurs supposedly target a big name player, it falls through but we look to have shown ambition. Is the club just drop feeding stuff to the media to make it sound like there’s a plan for investment and spending but in reality there’s little intent for it, due to the fact it’d require ENIC giving up a portion of their control/ stake?
We are exponentially wealthier than Ajax, Lille and Lyon. Dortmund aren't a million miles away but the other three aren't in the same galaxy.
There's no doubt that the club needs investment, if only to fund the next round of property development (hotel, luxury apartments, etc). There's still £50m in the kitty from a couple of years ago, when ENIC made their only capital contribution to the cause. However, for this development, that's loose change and likely to be eaten up by bathroom fittings (excluding taps and towel rails). So, money is needed, but nobody will invest at the ridiculous valuation applied to the shares on offer. So, Levy's playing hardball with the entire market. There's unlikely to be the acceptance of a lesser offering, as would happen if it was a transfer stalemate. Then, we'd downgrade from Sadio Mane to Moussa Sissoko (on a cheapskate payment plan)in a heartbeat...or swap Skriniar for Joe Rodon. Presumably, we're borrowed to the hilt and Joe's conviction for insider trading and departure from the scene at ENIC isn't helping matters. Where to now, Daniel? It will be resolved...as, with the non-soccerball activities in the stadium, it is the club's primary means of increasing ENIC'S profits.
Our academy approach has been a bit of a mess for years now. Really since the early Poch days when Mason, Bentaleb and of course Kane were the backbone of the first iteration of that team in his first season. Since then we’ve had Winks and Skipp become serviceable members of the squad before departing. Kyle Walker-Peters was badly managed or would have done the same. I don’t think we have a talent problem as there’s plenty of recent Spurs academy players who have gone on to have decent, or even good, careers through their 20s (Marcus Edwards and Noni Madueke for example). More recently I’m thinking of Alfie Dorrington, who is very highly rated, and could potentially have filled in for some of our issues at CB the last 12 months if he hadn’t had a horrible time with injury. Mikey Moore this season broke through and has now missed a month with illness. There’s some luck there too as there is with everything. All to say that yes, we’d all like the club to do better and it would help massively with squad building particularly when it comes to HG/CG rules in Europe.
That would be when we brought in Munn as DoF And then when we followed that with Lange bringing data-based scouting But apparently those aren't good enough, because Spurs fans can't leave the goalposts in one place for five minutes
This is the problem: it isn't Spurs fans are the Frasier Crane of the Premier League, because the moment they have what they were asking for all along they look for a way to self-sabotage so they can enjoy the misery instead I swear we could win a league and cup double and somebody out there will be raging that we didn't commit to winning a domestic treble
As far as I can see, the only clubs who can match or exceed our spending power without first needing to sell players are Liverpool, Arsenal and Real*. City used to be on that list but with those charges hanging over them, appear to have slowed down drastically in the net spend department. *Although Real have only exceeded our net spend once in the past 4 seasons, so their position might not be as strong as Sen. Perez leads on.
