I don’t think we have any cover for Romero? As we have Ben and VdV who could fill in at LB I would like to think a RCB is more imperative.

Dragusin? Potentially Alfie Dorrington once he returns from injury.

We have RCB cover in DRagusn

LCB is the weak spot, as that's Davies ATM

I think Dragusin would cover at LCB before Davies, too.

What I understand is that if you go all in once and lose, you're flat broke.

/Begin annoying and very skippable rant. Apologies in advance, but this has been bugging me for so long I thought a rant might be in order.

Top ten reasons why I hated the Dragusin purchase even more than I hated buying Richarlison.

    10. According to WhoScored, FBRef and my eyes, Dragusin is bad at passing and bad at tackling.
    9. To make way for him, Spurs sold Royal, who according to all three, is good at both.
    8. Dragusin is exactly the wrong defender for Angeball, a low block specialist with leadership qualities who would be good for a weak PL team.
    7. Dragusin had very few appearances for Spurs last year. His only start IIRC was Spurs' worst loss. He came on, what, three or four times as a sub? During one of these stints, Spurs turned a win into a loss. So that's six points dropped in his handful of appearances--when Spurs missed CL by two. So it seems at least somewhat likely that Spurs paid 20 million to miss the CL.
    6. Well, a low block specialist like him has his uses, even for Spurs, one might argue. But if so, why let Sanchez go, who was probably the standout defensive defender in the world last year, playing a big part in getting Columbia to the Copa final?
    5. Sanchez had one great attribute, speed, which Dragusin doesn't have.
    4. Spending money on reserves when your first 11 desperately needs a cash injection is rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic when you could be getting lifeboats ready.
    3. Unlike all other types of players, CBs and keepers aren't usually subbed in a game.
    2. The idea was that Spurs desperately needed a reserve CB. They had Dier, who only went on to help Bayern get to the CL finals. And Emerson (see above), a much better player for Angeball than Dragusin. If you say they were determined to go, which I think is debatable, why not bring along Phillips or some other youth. Was Phillips really at all likely to have done worse than Dragusin did last year? What's the worst case scenario? That you can't quite keep up your level of mediocrity?
    1. Buying someone you don't have starting minutes for, now or in the future, amounts to manufacturing deadwood. They don't play, so their value plummets. Then nobody will pay them what you paid them. So they soak up all the money in their contracts.

And I didn't even get to mention he's very one-footed--and that buying Richarlison, as disastrous as it was always going to be, was a lot more understandable. It must have started as a sensible move to replace Moura. The problem is there was a whole lot of make believe involved in thinking the, what?, 30th best striker in the world could replace Kane and start for Spurs. Richarlison was the second best striker on the fourth worst team in the PL.

Everything about buying Dragusin, on the other hand, seemed completely nuts from beginning to end. Most of the fan base seemed certain that Spurs needed a reserve CB for absolutely no reason. My guess is that the decision makers thought they were as crazy as I did at first, but eventually said, hey, we're in the business of giving the fans what they want, however nonsensical their wants are.

So they got just about the most inappropriate defender possible. And people seemed really happy. And, frankly, that would have been OK. The Guy Fawkes look alone has to be worth a few million. Spurs have certainly wasted more money on other players. The problem was the decision to actually let him play in the PL, which, as I say, IMO probably cost them a CL spot.

    /End annoying rant

Incidentally, I'm 100% in favor of what seems Spurs' current direction, which is trying to win a few years down the road by buying youth. It has been and will remain for the foreseeable future Spurs only workable strategy to win big trophies.

Damn, RWAERB, did Dragusin secretly bully you at school? <laugh>.

Must admit I quite like what I’ve seen of him albeit it’s barely enough to truly gauge how good he is/ can be. Has started a couple other matches though beyond the Fulham game and that game was nowhere near as bad as Toon away.

I think we needed to sign him back in January though. Sanchez ended up being a CB that couldn’t defend nor really do anything and Dier’s steady decline over a 3 or so year period was noticeable for all to see, I was delighted for him that he got a move to Bayern though, it’s fair to say he “fell upwards”! As for Emerson Royal, utterly dreadful player and delighted he’s gone. He’s already come in for stick on social media by Milan fans, very glad he’s their problem now.

I do wonder though if Dragusin regrets his decision to join us, especially as Bayern wanted him too. I doubt he expected to be so excluded after all the chasing we done, Romero and van de Ven are clearly first choice but a lot managers tend to find game time for their third choice. Might be someone that wants out in January and so far I couldn’t really blame him.

    Not necessarily

If you go all in with £100 and somebody who only has £80 calls and wins the hand, you would get £20 back as the other player could only call for a certain amount

You'd probably get checked out of the game soon after, mind

This is an interesting take, not what I was expecting when I saw the advance warning for a rant.

I do think there was an element of Paratici pushing the Dragusin transfer through due to the Juventus link and trying to develop our informal partnership with Genoa.

He looks like a very decent player and is more comfortable on the ball than various statistics sites seem to think he is. He was generally solid at the Euros and while he was terrible against Newcastle, so was the whole team from back to front. He simply hasn't had enough of a chance to adapt to the PL. It's too early to pass judgement imo.

I also think that the club is planning the long term succession for Romero, who could well be off sooner than we think. He's a top player but the red mist moments (worst of which was the red card against Chelsea last year - that cost us top 4), and the fact that he still can't communicate across the back line (Leicester game being the latest example) means that I personally won't miss him too much, especially if the fee is astronomical. Micky has the higher ceiling and imo we should be building the back line around him.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of Radu this season, I'm just not sure if Ange has any plans to use him unless we pick up injuries.

Poor guy didn’t even play in that <laugh>.

That was the one awful performance from van de Ven last season. By far our worst defensive display though and not the Fulham game as rwaerb initially suggested. Look forward to a repeat this weekend too with our annual drubbing at SJP…

Dragusin isn’t as good as Romero or Micky but he’s an upgrade on Sanchez and Dier for sure.

The biggest issue is he hasn’t played enough. Hopefully see him get some starts in Europa and domestic cup as he’s one that can come in and hopefully not weaken the team too much.

    You're right.

I'm just so in love with Micky, I automatically assume other players are to blame.

He dropped that stinker of a performance to remind us that he is in fact human.

Solomon's loan to Leeds is likely going to be announced today

Guess what the Leeds fans who are vocally against him joining are being accused of...?

Good luck to Manor. Would’ve personally preferred giving him a shot than bringing in Werner again but it’s the manager’s choice so I’ll back it.

Should do really well in the Champ and in a side like Leeds. Assess next summer, whether to keep or flip for hopefully a nice 100% profit.

Think the championship will be tough for him physically. His injury record isn’t great and it’s a relentless league, hopefully he does well enough to get Spurs a decent fee next summer

Ajax were reportedly looking to steal in late, so as long as he avoids another injury there's hope for next summer

All gone a bit quiet on the incomings front hasn’t it. Still think we need that left sided defender. It would be nice to see Dorrington around the squad but he’s coming back from injury and it’s a big step up in any case. So I’d like to see that addition this week. Difficult player to recruit though as they probably need to be HG.

Our signings mostly have been under the radar so I’m hopeful that we do make this one last addition. Without it we really are relying on Udogie to stay fit. Without him we lose so much from the team it would be madness not to have a like for like player (albeit not as good)
