Pete O’Rourke says we’re close to agreeing a deal for Spence. Around £20m. Think it’s a decent deal, been good for Forest. Only concern I have is he ain’t a great crosser, often relies on cutbacks or low drilled passes/ crosses once he’s on the edge of the box, quite similar to what Walker used to do and the latter could’ve likely had 5x as many assists in his Spurs career if he could adequately cross. Maybe Perisic can show him a thing or two though.
I’m quite excited about Spence. He’s still raw and will need to add to his game as you say but the physicality is there and he has the attacking instincts and knowledge of the WB position, and can beat a man. Good footballer too, which is where Emerson (who is also a good athlete) falls down. Spence also has Doherty ahead of him who has experience of stepping up to the PL in the same position, which will hopefully be helpful. He’ll have to learn to deal with the scrutiny and the increased pace of the game and the lack of the same time on the ball, but all the raw ingredients are there and hopefully this is the right environment for him. Exciting signing for sure.
Whilst the fee's a bit hefty, Spence is generally the type of signing that's been our bread and butter over the years. We've got a good success rate signing young, British players so ideally he follows suit. I think he's got a lot of favourable attributes to the WB role but the crossing side from what I've seen isn't one of them and personally I've been pretty peeved at the poor crossing from our right flank this season, both Emerson and Doherty deliver about 1 good cross in 20 attempts, it's just not good enough. So I worry that Spence may be similar, even if he does have the ability to get past a FB, something the other two can't. The only other worry I guess should he sign if he can step up quickly enough. Safe to say we all know Conte's probably not gonna be here in 2 years time and I think ideally he'd want to leave Spurs having won something and to do that you generally need quality. I think Spence can become a very good player in time but it'd be almost unfair to expect him to be great straight away and seeing as RWB is probably our weakest position at the club at the moment, it's quite a big ask hoping Spence improves it immediately.
Assuming that he follows in Doherty's footsteps, then he won't be there to cross it. The right winger will go wide more often and the wingback will move inside and attack the box.
Hey, he was getting there before he was brutally murdered by Villa! He even got Emerson to score. That's got to be worth something.
Another journo is talking about Spence now. Will Unwin, who seems to be someone that specialises in Forest news, is claiming we should be wrapping up a deal for him within a few days. So that’s a LWB, backup keeper and possibly a RWB sorted before pre-season. CB, creative mid and a striker is all that’s needed now I’d say. Anything else is then a bonus. Ticking along nicely for once, not used to this version of Tottenham.
Fantastic news . Yes Its so refreshing seeing Spurs being so proactive in the market for once instead of being reactive and often missing out. As you say the importance of getting them in early for Conte's preseason will be crucial. Spence looks a top talent raw, but has all the tools to be outstanding. If Paratici can bring in Pau Torres, Bissuma, Eriksen and a CF ( not sure who ) we are going to be very strong bext season.
The rumours about Weston McKennie are rumbling on. We know Paratici likes him as he bought him to Juve. Personally I think he’d be a great signing, does everything you want from a midfielder and you could even play him on the right of the attacking 3 if you had to as well. Also I like the idea of rinsing Juve again for a player who immediately becomes a top performer, tbh. Slight worry about his injury record but he actually played a lot in his first season at Juve and was only cut short this season because he broke a bone in his foot, so as long as there’s no repeat muscle injuries happening I think he’d be fine.
Celtic’s announced CCV, good luck to him. Someone I think the club had huge hopes for, remember Poch saying he believed he’d be a top Prem CB. Still plenty of time for that of course. Done well with Celtic last season though and should further develop, could probably see him in the Prem at some point I’d imagine. Edit: We’ve now announced it too:
Alasdair Gold has posted a shopping list GK: not a priority after Forster signed, unless an heir to Hugo becomes available RB: Spence developing, but keeping an eye on Achraf Hakimi and Wilfried Singo as other options CB: Pau Torres the preferred option (with Lo Celso to sweeten the deal if Man Utd sniff around), while Ilya Zabarnyi of Dynamo Kyiv is seen as a long-term prospect, while Gleison Bremer, Clement Lenglet and Marc Guehi are also options CM: Weston McKennie (of course), with an eye on James Ward-Prowse, Youri Tielemans and Yves Bissouma AM: We've been tracking Lucas Paqueta of Lyon after his impressive season (okay, who else saw a way to get Nom Belly off the books?) with his versatility appealing, while we're keeping an eye on James Maddison and Brennan Johnson CF: we're looking, but nothing concrete
Good for him. Went out on loan a million times and gradually got where he needed to be. Does leave the possibility of facing him in the CL, though... Do we need to sign an American now? Seems like a long time since we've been without one.
Personally I'd prefer Bissuma if we are buying another CM but theres no doubt Weston McKennie is a fine player and of course Paratici and Conte, especially the former know him very well. He's definitely all action, defensively good and has a great engine, good on the ball and surprisingly good in the air when he attacks the box. Saw him in the Amazon Juve All or Nothing doc and he's certainly a character. Be a very good signing although I'm surprised Juve would be willing to let him go as it seems he's really appreciated there.
