You might find gold if you keep digging that hole deep enough.

I've been over arguing so I've drifted a long way from my original point.
In summary I would usually prefer our manager to play a settled system and have two players for each spot so everyone who comes in knows exactly what their role ought to be. However the reason why I don't think we need a second striker is that we are simply not going to get one who can play like Kane. Kane is a one off because at one level he is a typical centre forward, a very good finisher with his head and both feet. But he is also a fantastic passer of the ball when he drops deep. I don't think a player like Vinicius or indeed anyone else, can play anything like the same game so we necessarily have to play differently when Kane isn't available. That gives us more options to cover for him than just having a traditional centre forward.

Romano’s said Valencia are confident of getting Gil on loan. They’ll pay his whole wage too (not that I imagine it’s too extortionate).

have to say i think this misses the point which is you cannot have a nearly equivalent Kane so you have someone who can do a "job" for you albeit in a different way . An obvious example in the case of my team is we use Firmino and Jota as CF and they are really different players in style .
As an aside you could learn from us as we when Klopp really wants someone who he is convinced will meet what he requires we are willing to pay what is possibly / probably more than they are worth and so far most of them have been well worth it .

This makes some more sense and thanks for clarifying. But we still need someone who knows how to play there. Whether a target man for others to play off who occupies defenders or a pacy striker to run the channels and create space for Son et. al., having someone who understands the position is better than a stand-in. I’m not convinced Son can do it unless we purely counterattack and Conte clearly thinks Bergwijn has the movement but I prefer a physical presence who can act as a reference point for the team, something I believe Conte has also said he wants in as many words. Especially if we play 2 up top, an aerially dominant player will create opportunities for Son/Bergwijn as his partner and be more effective than the two of them together.

Hence, a specialist, even to an extent a limited one, is important.

I hoped for it. I still do, though it’s becoming more of an ask with every hour.

Pool got firmino, Salah, Mane n Jota and they go n get another attacker/winger

why? It improves everything…it improves the squad, it improves the first team and it put a rocket up the arse of the current starters because someone is waiting if standards drop

Us, what will happen to Son…but we just bought Brian Gil…we don’t need him…will he get a game

    Big club - big thoughts
    Big club - small thoughts

    **** off Levy

Vinicius never had to play like Kane though, he was signed to deputise for him and provide an option off the bench and he done that just perfectly. He finished the season with 10 goals and 3 assists, for a second choice striker that's very, very effective. He gave us exactly what we needed.

Now without Vinicius, those easy wins you mentioned earlier in the Europa League weren't so easy in the Europa Conference League without him, to the point where we didn't win enough. Against Morecambe we had to bring on Kane because we never had another striker to choose from and your theory that players like Dele can step up can in Kane's absence wasn't proven to be so as Dele was awful and subbed off. Games like that are where we massively miss someone like Vinicius, not only for his likely goals but the prevention of overplaying Kane which we do far too often.

Look at when we had Llorente too, he was also nothing like Kane and yet provided some crucial moments for us, especially in his second season.

The importance of a good sub and second choice player shouldn't be underestimated, especially strikers. That's why Origi was and is worth his weight in gold for Liverpool for what he's done for them.

Here's the thing with Diaz: A few weeks there was talk of him being a summer target for Liverpool, which just so happened to coincide with both Salah and Mane umming and ahhing on new contracts as both of which have eighteen months on them and surely one if not both are weighing up their options for a move to one of Spain's big one and a half (since Barca have technically been demoted)

So we tried to sneak in and nab him from under them and met Porto's fee and Diaz was supposedly happy to agree terms, but the Liverpool got wind of it and came in with the same base offer as us but a bunch more performance-based addons

Which does beg an interesting question: does that mean we should've gone in for him earlier and risk Liverpool coming in then, or should we have kept our cards close to our chest and pulled the rug from under Liverpool as the window was about to close?

Guys you are still missing my point. I don't want anyone playing instead of Kane as a central striker. I want us to play Son and Lucas in their normal positions and someone, Gil? Dele? in the role Firmino plays at Liverpool. Ideally we should have kept Bale for that actually.

So you’re saying that when Kane doesn’t play you want a false 9?
