What we've learnt is that even £40m - £50m players are not necessarily better than what we have. Where should we get the money from to buy even more expensive ones?
I think he is the type of player who can see holes appearing around him and is drawn to try and plug them , I do not defend him as he can and does make mistakes however has we saw when he played for Denmark he was far more effective in his roll as he had others around him doing their job , get a stronger defence behind him and another midfielder I hope we will see more consistency all round
I doubt Denmark would be in the top 7 if they played in the PL with that squad. He has better players alongside him at Spurs. I think he is potentially a good player but needs more discipline.
I’d say what we’ve actually learnt is that Levy/ Hitchen/ Poch were terrible at identifying targets they wanted to spend big on. We paid nearly £100m for two players that are about £25m quality, if that. There’s then also the £40m we spent on Sanchez too.
Every top club has done exactly that several times. We just need to suck it up. Unfortunately it seems to have put us off buying expensive players so we wasted money on cheaper ones last season instead.
Except our record is horrendous when we spend anything over £30m. What we tend to do is target players we hope will be worth the fee we paid and not players that already are, or alternatively we piss it away on mediocrity like Sissoko. I doubt Paratici would’ve been hired if we were spending well. Whether he rectifies those problems remains to be seen but a change was needed in the transfer department, the initial regime was responsible for Spurs taking a massive decline over the last few years as we were wasting money on utter dross which then added to the dross we already had like Winks, Sissoko and co.
Strange how once you've made your conclusion you can apply it to the entirety of a players time with us. Sissoko has not been mediocrity. He had a poor start but he improved massively to someone who for a season was one of my first names on the team sheet. Absolutely he has not been good throughout but that is not the same is saying he is mediocre as if he always was.
What we’ve learnt is that we have too many average players on good money and long term contracts that make them nearly impossible to shift. This has been the issue for a number of seasons now. Why should anyone buy Sissoko, Aurier or NDombele?
Burnley to sign Will Hughes from Watford for £5m Been saying since last season that Hughes is a player we should be picking up as a canny signing, as he's from a similar mold to Kalvin Phillips but without the price being inflated by the hype
Some hack from the Mail is claiming that City's initial offer for Kane was £75m+£25m in add-ons. The player should be insulted by that, let alone the club.
We should offer £25m + £75m in add-ons for Phil Foden The add-ons include - winning the Copa America - being named Asian Player of the Year - goals scored in U18s games
Sissoko and Aurier have a season left on their contracts. As they're impossible to sell, just loan them out and accept that we may have to supplement some of their wages. These things happen...at other clubs. At other clubs, the priority is the squad for the manager. We'll be stuck with players in the squad, who the manager doesn't want, because we couldn't get a (large enough) transfer fee for them...and the players stay for the wage It's like keeping a burned out car because the finance's still got 3 months to run.
The real issue is where our wages sit in regards to clubs below us If Sissoko was at Chelsea and being paid £150k a week, he would accept that he would need to take a significant pay cut to play in the real world For us, though, Sissoko is on £80k a week, and if the most he's being offered is £50k a week by some Ligue 1 club, while in real terms that's a significantly smaller cut than the one he would have to take to leave Chelsea, it also means he won't have the nest egg that he would have from sitting on Chelsea's bench for a season or two Wanyama torpedoing his move to Brugge because they expected him to take a relatively small wage cut and therefore continued to draw a wage from us for six months longer is the perfect example of this
We should be looking to bring in superior players to Sissoko and Aurier, they're not completely useless. If we can't get any money for them or get someone to cover their wages, then they should be squad players. Neither seems particularly disruptive and one will be off to the African Nations fairly soon, anyway. We don't have either the numbers or the quality to sideline players and not replace them. I'd much rather move them on and bring in new players, of course. If that's not possible, then they've got to be better than chucking in kids that aren't ready. The match against Pacos was a shambles and it shouldn't be repeated.
Should see if Saints fancy a swap deal, Aurier (or Doherty) for KWP. He’s no longer first choice there judging by how the season’s started and the sad reality is he’s probably better than at least one of our current natural RBs, arguably both and he’d boost our CG/ HG numbers.
