Austin on one leg is a better finisher than Dykes will ever be.
I like Dykes in the same way I liked Mackie, but he's not the answer up front imo.
I'm not convinced Austin was ever fully fit last season and that there was as much going on mentally as physically.
I would have retained him as a squad player to bring on when a goal was needed.
Two problems with that:
He may not settle for that and we may not have the luxury of carrying someone in that way.
Of course, he may prove us all wrong and play regularly next season, scoring 20 goals.
Bang on in my opinion.
I like Dykes, but if he got 10 goals in a season then that would be superb for him.

I wasn’t claiming that Dykes is any good, just comparing his performance last season with Austin’s. Both were crap for alleged out and out strikers and there is a bit of a myth around ‘bring Charlie on and he will score’. Having seen Austin at all stages last season he was certainly never fit, and I don’t know if he ever will be again. Time to move on from him. Dykes too, if we get a chance, or unless Beale can work on him.
It's moot anyway and like you say time to move on. I would say though their stats aren't really directly comparable, Dykes had much game time than Charlie, something like 16 completed 90 mins vs Austin 3. Still think Austin is a natural, his last goal proved that, whereas Dykes is not.

Hoping Beale can get a tune out of Dykes but he really has to start realising his potential and his injury record is a worry, he wasn't fit all season and is injured again now.

Definitely need another striker innit.

I'd be very happy if we conducted our transfer business under the radar, far from the rumour mill and with wisdom. Those years turn out well much more often than the Chris Samba, Julio Cesar etc years. Loic Remy possible exception to the rule!

Smithies is available on a free as he's been released by Cardiff. Strange one letting him go for free after paying something like £3.5 million to us for him?

Strongly linked to Cameron Archer...
We were the minute Beale took over ! Excellent on loan at Preston after January and they want him back. Gerrard has said he wants to look at him in pre season before making any decision on him. Don't expect any move for him to happen quickly no matter what is decided, if we do get him on loan then it won't happen for a while but would be an excellent addition.

Forget Freeman , way past his best. How many games has he played in the last 3 years ? He must be ruling the day he left us , only to disappear onto various benches and never get a chance to fulfil his talent. You look at Eze and he had a huge impact 2nd half of his first season in the Prem and only injury curtailed his rise. Glad to see him getting back to near his best near the end of this season, how Freeman must look at him with envy and think if only !

Swift joining WBA
Yeah Swift is class and we have no chance of getting him, out of our price range. Whatever money we do have to spend its vital we spend it in the right areas, Strikers and wing backs. As long as we can keep Willock and Chair they'd more than compensate getting in a Swift like player. I'd like to see us get another attacking midfielder though as the goals from there have been sparse over the last few years.
