But there are two methods of pressing, you can play deep/compact and still press the opposing team or you can play high line and press the team. If he is switching between the two in a game thats a bad idea and the reason why we have a different types of defenders paired with each other.

he seems to have a press sometimes game. players have to interpret the type of ball or the circumstances in which a player receives it or controls it badly and then press.

It's like ok lose it high up.. press a bit... then back off, back off, back off.... oh look that guy has his back to goal.. press press press. half the team go the other half don't.

It seems to be one CM is told go with the front 3 and the others to not do so and the defence and they sit off and you'll find a henderson popping out of the line going hard at someone who just passes it round him.

We will have to see what he does.

I personally think Sakho is very different to Skrtel, do you not?

I had this conversation with Jimmy, I think Sakho is somwhere inbetween he wants to read the game and be a ball playing CB but at this moment in his development he gets it wrong quite often and attacks the ball when he should hold.

Isn't that the problem though? We don't have different types of defenders paired with each other, the pairing is always too similar.

I agree with you luv.

I do also agree skertl likes to back off while lovern likes to step into a challenge and can be beaten... however.... skertl is not a swepper type player

the two pairing to note are ferdinand/vidic and carvalho/terry... The big thick lump can go attack the ball all day knowing the other guy would be covering. We have not seen that out of skertl and anyone yet... another example is hyppia and carragher.. carragher quite happily sweeping up behind the big man.

skertl played well in 2013/14 as all he did was play high and head the ball. did quite and effective job too. SAS terrorised everyone so he could play high... the issue was we conceded a shed load but not really off him.

Its when he is expected to go do a game he's not naturally able to do he is weak. sahko, skertl and lovern are all similar.

this is why i think i hear this clamor for an untried ilori. awful lot of eggs in that basket by some fans.

IMO rdogers has told sahko numerous times during games to hold his position. Sahko wants to run forward. you can't be at that all the time either.... not when you have no player to step in behind in CM.

Again perfect example. watch any game with alonso in it. you would see our CBs run on at times and alonso just step into the hole and cover them. Lucas does do this but gerrard most of the time wasn't arsed, especially last year. As a result we ended up 3-4-3 and that gave some allowance to both can and sahko to move forward if space allowed.

My view is step one get 4-3-3 working. step 2 play can at holding cm, step 3 work on support play and positioning..... and the most important step of all is teach every LFC player how to hold players and pull shirts in the box at set piece.

SKRTEL V LOVERN.
Both are rough tacklers.. seems Skrtel read the game better than Lovern.
Liabilities of both: Capable of giving opponents penalty kicks.
Both good with their heads,
Plus points: Both can improve

All those I have bolded show exactly why they are different. If you look at what Sakho does better compared with Skrtel and Vice Versa shows that one is a defender who drops deep and one is a player who plays on the front foot.

I think our team pushes too high and the defence don't go with them. Based on the defenders we have if we dropped Skrtel and played lets say Ilori (granted his is in experienced) with Sakho I think we would see us concede less goals. In our current crop of centre backs I think Skrtel is the odd one out. Not that he's rubbish (far from it) but he is the one least suited to how we play.

I agree they are different but the point really is that the stats don't reveal Skrtel to be the terrible player some say he is (on here). IMO I'd read the stats the opposite way to you simply because however we have set up under BR we concede far too many. Defenders should be defenders first and foremost and if they have the ability to carry it forward on occasion then that's a bonus not the other way around. I couldn't care less how often my centre backs maraude into midfield or charge out to make a tackle. Centre backs should have to do that rarely not constantly....if we had a decent bloody midfield shielding them we wouldn't need a "front foot" defender. Centre backs should be playing next to each other "defending" and that should be the only thing they have to think about.

Lovren is a dead man walking imo.

aren't we all?

I would think that that is hopeful at this point... but we just don't know til the first team sheet comes out.

My view is I hope rodgers has given the guy every chance in preseason to prove why he isn't right for the role. He's been woeful in preseason at times.

sure but when you play :bandit: benteke you need to have confidence that when you jump with him your other half is not slacking off and if you miss the header or he gets in front of you that its not an open ****ing goal.

One of the prime reasons we lost the league is our two cbs were in full back positions for a pass when slippy g fell over... in the 46th minute of a game you need some intelligence to say ok... well i'm going to sit tight now... nobody on the pitch at the back has the capability to make that call and work together... a quick word like.. 42 mins or 40 mins.. lets lokc it up mate <ok> would not go astray at the heart of LFC defence.

I would like to say that Brendan Rodgers made a big mistake of buying Lovern. Rodgers was impressed because he scored the only
goal against us in 2012/2013 season at Anfield. How many goals has he scored since his arrival?.

Don't miss the bloody header then <whistle> If you're gonna charge out for the header you better be damn sure you're going to make it...if not then step off and Benteke :bandit: can win as many headers as he likes but they won't make a blind bit of difference....and he sure as hell won't get beyond you.

....I agree about where we lost the league and again that comes from Rodgers trying to reinvent the wheel. Split central defenders....fullbacks who can't tackle....no midfield shield...a goalkeeper who can't sweep up etc etc As I said earlier setting up a defence in England is not rocket science but Rodgers doesn't have it in him to let them defend as their primary role or "lock it up" even for 5 minutes and that's still our biggest issue. I've no problem with full backs pushing forward or the centre backs stepping up (together) but do it when appropriate (ie read the game) not just as a default setting.

This is against utd last year just before Mata scored. I am interested to hear what peoples thoughts on this are?
