Lallana was a luxury buy, completely unnecessary player that flatters to deceive. For £25m he is the kind of signing that only city and chelsea could afford to make. Had we not had Lallana last season, nothing about our season would have changed - he added very little. But then so did many other players I guess.

all he does is a nice little cryuff turn then looks up and wonders. He doesn't deliver that many passes SO FAR. if a proper foward was in front perhaps he'd get better... but you just go watch us v utd or cheslea. both sides will swamp the middle and lallana will have no free space and be blown off it.

and a buy sought after pre world cup thus was a luxury signing on the assumption suarez stayed.

Personally, I think the club knew for a long time that Suarez was leaving.

It seemed like Rodgers was desperate to revert back to a 4-5-1 which would mean Lallana would come in for Suarez, which is why I think Lallana was the number 1 target.

We did end up going for Sanchez as a Suarez replacement but that seemed like a last minute bid with no real back up targets or plan.

Sir Red says it best - take Lallana out of the team last season and you wouldn't notice. To be fair, the same can be applied to a number of players.

I do hope so.

I suspected at the time we gave him a new deal it was done to get the price right and fob off all uk bids.

I so look at Lambert being bought then the club wondering what to do and ending up with badontelly..... well it looks more like incompetence... but the sanchez stuff could indicate that was plan a and we only ever had plan a.

I do not think we were on for 4-5-1 from last year.. no way.

Some things I do know about Rodgers going into this season.

He planned for Coutinho to play CM (explains why he now wants Kovacic).
He did not want Balotelli, but gave in because he knew of Sturridge's injuries. He was then left stuck with a player who was counter productive to him.
He thought Lovren was the savior to our defensive woes.

I suspect Rodgers had this team in mind:

Mignolet
Johnson Skrtel Lovren Moreno
Gerrard
Henderson Coutinho
Sterling--------------------Lallana
Sturridge
Lallana was injured before he started. Coutinho and Gerrard were not strong enough for those roles. Sturridge got injured and Balotelli was counter productive to that team. Lovren flopped terribly. Mignolet started the season poorly.

If Rodgers tries the same plan again, but adjusts the players to suit we could see this:

Mignolet
Wisdom Skrtel Sakho Moreno
Lucas
Henderson Kovacic
Sterling-----------Coutinho
Sturridge
Still not ideal but hopefully better.

Nope - having a pop at him for buying a player who simply does not improve our first XI and spending £25m in the process of doing so.

Unfortunately, I'm not blinded by Lallana's Cruyff turns and I can see through the 'style' and realise that he lacks substance.

And you think 27 appearances, 5 goals and 3 assists is good enough for a player who was supposed to replace Luis Suarez and became a first team regular?

I mentioned in another thread, Henderson has more assists than Iniesta this season. Looking soley at goals and assists is all well and good but I like to look beyond that - his overall contribution to gameplay is average at best, but the worst thing is that he bottles pretty much every big game we played.

So no, I'm not having a go at Rodgers for playing him in his best position - it's just a shame that a) he felt the need to make a mid table/squad player our marquee signing and b) he didn't play other players in their best positions or play to their strengths.

He didn't replace Suarez... He's a midfielder not a Cf. your lov child balotelli was his replacement and he has even worse stats than Lallana.

Firmino agent has said that he'll be moving to prem and medical will take place while he's out in s.america.

Would love it to be us but not getting my hopes up

will be sacked after 6 games if he does that <ok> six league matches that is.

Really Jimmy? Lallana for Suarez!! I have seen you make up some stuff in your arguments but this one is up there. Before Suarez bit Chiellini, I believed he was a Liverpool player. The moment FIFA sat and decided it is a 4 month match ban, you knew it was curtains closed for the fella.

Sanchez was the replacement for Suarez and off all players available at the time worth our time only Lacazette was available.

There was no other quality striker who was
  • Available
  • Willing to come to Liverpool
So we panicked and bought Balo who we would have been better off keeping our money and played Borini.
